Has anyone ever done socks on circular needles? I know that I saw a pattern to make them this way but can't find it now. I just don't want to mess with all those little needles to do them the regular way. The one pair of socks that I have (Missy knitted them for me) are my favs! I hate cold feet and these always keep my feet toasty. Thought I'd try knitting some new ones before cold weather got here.

I haven't done socks on circular needles yet but I'd sure love to learn how! I don't mind using the DPN needles to make socks, especially since I got my set of harmony wood needles. They're gorgeous multicolored and wood and make sock knitting a breeze!

I have tried and find it really hard.
I have knitted for years and many socks.
I will contiue on the 4 double needles, Thank you very much Ha.
But,
I have been known to make things harder than they really are.
It may be easy.
but, I found it hard,
I have knitted around 3 dozen of socks. for gifts and me/ pinkroses

It is the only way I make socks now. 2 at once on one circular needle. I love it. Takes a little longer, but once you are done, your done.

I just started a sock on 2 circular needles a few days ago. I think it is a lot easier than with the short double pointed needles. I am using the beginner sock pattern from a book called "Socks soar on two circular needles," by Cat Bordhi. Someone saw me knitting it and said I ought to be knitting two socks at once on the 2 needles, but I thought that for now I'd better try one at a time.

I am learning to make socks, as we speak. I am starting with circular needles. I have the tube going ok at this point. I am going to a local yarn/quilt shop to get a lesson on how to do the heal and other pointers. It's my first attempt. The circular needles are really easy to use. I haven't tried DPN, but may at a later time.
I do want to know - Michele - do you mean you do BOTH socks at the same time??? Explain??? Please???

I have been afraid of the double pointed needles and really have been wanting to make a pair of socks, my SIL gave me some sock yarn and the circular needles, all is going well right now, haven't gotten to the heel yet. I think the are really small(needles) but less intimidating then the double pointed. Good Luck!

I love using the magic loop method to knit socks. It actually helps me to not enter the "second sock syndrome" blackhole. When I was knitting socks using dpn's it would take forever for me to finish a pair of socks. Now, I just speed along and have finished up a pair in one week. That's why I love knitting socks with one long circular needle! A pair of socks in a week!

| i have yet to brave makign socks. is there a special yarn you use? anything i wear has to be very soft or it hurts my skin terribly. they also need stretch. this making both at once seems to be an excellent idea for those of us who have a problem doing the second one of anything lol. i am gonna have to check this out! peace connie in alaska |

I've made socks on 3 to 5 dp needles but have not tried the circulars. Everyone tells me they are the best... I kinda like the feel of all those little wooden twigs in my hand though. I've seen Cat's book but I'm not sure it's something I'd want to try without someone around to help out. I'm kinda visual when it comes to that stuff.
Connie...I need to send you some sock yarn from my stash...oh, and some yo yo's. I can't believe that you are up there in the frozen north in your little cabin and NOT making socks!

| it is my PLAN to make socks for all of us. we are trying to become much less dependant on "store bought" since when we move to the bush we will be 150 airmiles from town and wont have much $$ to spend even if we get there lol. right now i am learning so much. my full plan includes creating my own yarns from either plants or animals that i can grow or find wild here. i wonder how aquirrel fur would spin up? we have tons of those danged little rodents! they arent the nice big ones that you can eat, just little rodents that dstroy you insulation and eat your garden! hmm maybe spin bears fur? oe wolfl? i know they spin some dog hair up here and make wonderful warm scarfs, hats and mittens from it. i dont ever turn down anything free *wink*. perhaps that is why my little cabin is so overcrowded! lol. i tend to learn things on my own since i am too cheap to pay for lessons and for some reason i never start at the beginning making something simple cuz thats too boring! lol peace connie in alaska |

Squirrel hair socks - LOL! Let us know how that works out for you! Do you suppose that when you wear them you'd get the urge to go out and bury peanuts in the dirt?? I think that I'll stick to wool for now!!

| i promise to let you know as soon as i try it! these squirrels wouldnt know what a peanut looked like. they prefer bites of straewberries out of my garden. they dont even have the decency to eat the entire berry, just take a bite and go to the next one! grrrr maybe i wont spin their fur! i might be tempted to shoot my own foot! lol. peace connie in alaska |

I have never tried to do it with the circular needles (although I use them for other knitting) because I really like using the wooden dpns..I use 5. But someday I would like to try it..alot of gals love knitting socks that way. My favorite yarn is the alpaca sock yarn from Grace Gerber!!!

There are lots of wonderful and soft sock yarns out there nowadays. My yarn stash is a testament to that fact!
Ugh I can relate to the yard rats (aka:squirrels) as we have a bumper crop of the little beasts this year. They raid the bird and hummingbird feeders, my tomatoes, and also have dug up numerous flowers.

Angie, yes both socks are knitted at the same time on one circular needle. No counting or measureing to make sure they are the same length. I really like being done with both at the same time. I like trying new things, or ways of doing them.

Every once in while I try to do two circ and I've even tried one long circ but I always seem to mess it up and go back to my DPN's. I'll have to try it again sometime.

I have been rolling the thought around in my head to try to figure it out. Maybe Michele could explain how she does it. Michele???? =) i haven't found the directions in my pile of knitting books from the library.

I got these directions from my aunt. use a 40 inch needle
Cast on half the number of stitches reqired for sock one onto the circular needle. (have enough yarn out to cast on the entire number of stitches)
Then with another ball of yarn, cast on the full number of stitches required for sock two.
Find the midway pint of these stitches and then pull the cable out in a big loop at this point.
Then pick up the yarn left hanging when you finished the first half of sock one, and cast on the second half of those stitches.
YOu are now ready to knit the cuff and leg of the socks. Your home position will have the needles on the right, the work in the middle, a large loop of cable on the left. The yarn should be coming from the back and the right.
Make sure when you join the stitches in the first row, that there is not twist in the stitches. You will knit the first half of sock one, then the first half of sock two, then turn your work, knit the second half of sock two, and then the second half of sock one. Be sure to change yarn when you change socks.
That is how you get started.
