have any of you gurlz ever subscribed to the BOTTOM LINE publication? we've gotten it for years. sometimes it tends to have a 'scary' article in it .. but it has been very good for the most part in keeping us informed about health and financial issues. we've benefited from both .. but NEVER without checking with our own physicians and 'money man'.
here's one of the kinda' scary ones .. but good advice .. (they just had an excellent on on 'tick bites' too!)
"skin cancer on the scalp or neck is more deadly than skin cancer on other parts of the body. Possible reason: scalp and neck melanomas often are thicker when detectred, suggesting that they either are found later or more aggressive. SELF-DEFENSE: have an annual skin check by a dematologist .. wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen when outside."
some of the 'advice' is surely 'common sense' .. but it never hurts to have a little reminder-ette.
i'll post a few more things from this week's issue too.

and How to Stretch Your Gasoline. A few of the strategies are: use cruise control on highways. don't use air-conditioning at speeds less than 60 miles per hour. Open the windows instead.
Use the internet to find the lowest gas prices .. but don't waste gas and money driving extra miles to buy it.
TURN THE PUMP HANDLE 10 degrees after pumpng gas. This forces a bit more gas into the tank. Also, tighten the fuel cap firmly before you leave.
Don't use four-wheel drive when it's not needed. (uhhh-duhhh!)
SLOW DOWN.
Avoid Quick Starts and Stops.
Don't idle. Turn off the engine if you'll be at a standwill for more than a minute.
Maintain your car.
Get rid of excess weight.
The article, of course, goes on to 'explain' the hows and whys of these suggestions.

FOOT HEALTH: don't use flip-flops for everyday wear. They may change the way you walk, causing pain in the heel, ankle, lower leg and toes. And they are a "no-no" for diabetics!!!

RELIEVE ITCHING: (i'm gonna' try this next time i get a mosquito bite!) Rub roll-on antiperspirant over mosquito bites. The aluminum salts help reabsorb fluid form the bite. The swelling goes down, and the itching stops!

men have more memory problems than women do. Men are one and ahalf times more liely to suffer from mild cognitive impairment, which involves difficulties with memory and thinking. People with mild cognitive impairment are three to four times more likely to develop Alzheimer's than people without the condition. (from the May Clinic researach of 2,000 people).
ohhhhhhhh .. how many times do we women hear ourselves saying to our husbands: "you don't LISTEN to me!" ha! apparently they DO .. but they just don't 'remember'!

AND FROM THE jOURNAL OF THE aMERICAN hEART aSSOCIATION .. A STUDY THAT REPORTS:
wealth lowers stroke risk during middle age.
Recent finding: People ages 50 to 64 with the fewest financial assets had about twice the risk for strok as people of the same age with the most wealth. Beyond age 65, welath and income are not significant indicators of stroke risk.
(i'm guessing the the 50 to 64 age group perhaps work harder and worry more about money .. at 65 .. we know 'it ain't money honey'!!)
