Hello..just wondering if anyone out there had a child with autism or on the spectrum. We still don't have a diagnosis. We went once and they said no...but that was when he was 18 months old. He's now three and it's more apparent there are problems. He starts pre-school next month and I'm scared to death. He doesn't do well in new and different situations. He still has few words and has alot of obessive behaviors. I'd like to hear from anyone out there who has a child on the spectrum and how things are going.

I have a daughter that is diagnosed with autism. She was diagnosed at 3 1/2, she is now 5 1/2years old. Is your son getting any therapies? If so which ones? I noticed something was wrong with our daughter at 14 months and started speech and occupational therapy at 18months. Since she didn't have a diagnosis till 3 1/2 we paid out of pocket twice weekly for 2 years. She is still getting speech and OT and she had a feeding tube placed when she was 3 because she has severe feeding issues (still does). She is talking and makes wonderful eye contact. But I really attribute all that to her tutor, speech and occupational therapist that have worked so hard with her. We got her a horse and have been doing therapeutic riding and she's been doing great. It's been alot of work but she is getting better.

Does KY have Early Childhood programs in special education? I'm in MI and we support kids from 0-26. Federal law only covers 3-21 so many states follow those guidelines.

It's the special education website for KY. I know it seems overwhelming but you should really read as much as you can. If you scroll down the page, there is a parent section.
Are you in Christian County? (I did a search for Cerulean)... If you are then here is your special education site for your school(s):

You don't say where you went to have your child evaluated? The school? Privately? Schools must complete a comprehensive evaluation. You know there may be a support group in your area or an ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) they can provide a lot of information including advocates, should you need one. | Hello..yes he is presently in therapy. He has been since he was 18 months old. He had OT and speech til he was three and now we are seeing a speech therapist at the hosptial once a week til school starts. We have seen a feeding specialist but that didn't help alot. He still has a VERY limited diet and won't chew. I've kept his weight up with Pedi-Sure and Carnation Instant Breakfast with every glass of milk he drinks (advice from his feeding specialist). Weight wise he is right where he should be but it's not because of his eating...more of what he drinks. I also sometimes blend baby food fruit in with the Pedisure. He will drink it as long as he doesn't see the blender out. I had him evaluated at the University of Louisville (the closet place to us that does that) back in April of 2007 and they said they didn't think he fell in the "autism umbrella" but had a "significant developmental delay". We just got the appointment in the mail today for Sept 23rd for another evaluation. His regular pediatrician suspects autism and his therapist of course can't diagnosis, but they think he falls somewhere in the spectrum. He has just now starting saying a few words and has started doing a lot of repeating of what you say in the past six weeks. He does have great eye contact with some people...not others. It's as if he can tune some people completely out when he wants to. Some days are just easier than others. There are days when he is totally in his own world and you really have to pull him back. Alot of "rough housing" and physical stuff gets him going and gets him more "normal" and out of his world. At the present (and we've had this habit for over 3 months now) he is obsessed with anything red and blue. He has to have one in each hand all the time. Doesn't matter what the red and blue is, just as long as it's red and blue. This week it has been a red and blue lid. He seems to prefer circles that are red and blue but will pick out anything that is red and blue as long as there is one of each. He also has an obsession with matching like objects up even though they are not really alike but have the same shape. Something you probably wouldn't notice unless you pick them up and really look. He's a wonderful loving little boy.....loves to hug and kiss you and loves to cuddle with you at night before he goes to sleep. He just has a lot of comunication problems and obsession problems that I am really afraid is going to effect his learning abilities. I am hoping that continued therapy will help. So far, no one has seemed to reach him. |

| My Son has Autism(PDD_NOS) He is 8 1/5 and was finally diagnosed 6 months ago( along with ad/hd) Us parents and kiddo's have lots of sruggles,but with Gods help all is posible."Trust in the Lord with all your heart" I think we all need to talk to each other,help and pray for all our families! We just told our Son,he is our oldest(8,6,4,2)He cried and said he didn't want it,and we said we didn't want him to have it either!!It just sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
