As I was coming home from an interview, the song "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" came on the radio. I began thinking about my own friendships and how I treasure them dearly. Each person is so unique that I would do anything for them and I know they would bend over backwards to help out. Actually one did as she loves doing backbends (she use to be a cheerleader back in high school).

I know that I can confide in my friends about things that are bothering me or to share good news. I know that if I need someone to talk to, they will lend a good ear. I know that they will not make fun of others or talk poorly of others. I hate people that are two faced and talk poorly about others and I cut those people out of my life. They are not worth the aggravation and it always comes back to haunt them later on. I've seen it happen.

I have friends that I've known since I began kindergarten to some I just met. My mom said that I've never met a stranger. I just treat others how I wanted to be treated.

Oh, I got to add this too...my friends are always considerate of others and they don't let the world revolve around just themselves with a "me me me" attitude. One of my dear friends is going through cancer treatments and yet, she still makes time out of the day to call folks, write letters, etc. She said that it isn't about her, its about making a difference in someone else's life.

One of my favorite quotes is "A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."

So what are your favorite things about your friends that you enjoy or perhaps the "recipe" for a good friendship?

Oh you are too sweet Marly. I see that you are down from Louisiana. One of my dear friends lives outside of Baton Rouge. I just spoke with her on the phone last night. We've known each other for several years.

That is really wonderful you have friends like that. You can call yourself blessed/lucky for sure. I would love to have some like that but as you said yourself, I always seem to run into women/people who are just like you mentioned. :( It's very hard to find the quality ones...

... that's one reason this forum is so nice! I don't see many, if ANY, catty snarky silly women here!

I have very few friends. I love the ones I have got, but I would rather spend my time/ effort focusing on strengthening my relationship with my parents, siblings, and inlaws. We have a huge family and I have seen friends come and go as we have moved/ they move/ move on, but family is ALWAYS there.

Tracy we would love for you to come to Ky, I like PA to especially over around Lancaster co. I used to do the renningers antique show a lot . Yeah you will meet lots of great friends on here, I had a few of them here from the forum a week or so ago and what wonderful girls they are. I guess everybody knows us so very seldom do we ever have a bad apple at our place when we do we just laugh if and say look what the cats drug in. Life is to short to dwell on silly things, there is so much more happiness being good to another

Jessica,
How wonderful a topic. I do not have gobs of friendships but the ones that I do I treasure. Some of them are family, some of them are farmgals but each one of them is precious to me.

I think for me some of my friendships have only been for a season, as life changes some of our friendships do to. Then there are the ones where you don't get to talk real often but when you do it is like you are right back where the conversation was before and go from there. Each one is different and you cherish them all.
Friends support you, tell you the truth, encourage, cry with, laugh with and are real. Now that is real friendship.

You girls are too kind. I've learned in this world that you can never take your friends for granted. Be sure to spend time with them and with your family as well because you never know what tomorrow brings. I've lost a few dear friends over the years from cancer, car wrecks, and other things.

Carol, you are definitely right with that last sentence...."friends support you, tell you the truth, encourage, cry with, laugh with and are real." When I've been in job interviews they have asked about what kind of job do I want or what kind of person am I. It's made me think a lot over the last few months. I know that I've always enjoyed supporting others and encouraging them and don't mind a bit to raise the ole shirt sleeves up and dig in to help.

So...here is the "challenge of the day"...is there someone in your life that you haven't spoken to in a while? Give them a call, send them a card, do something for them. Sometimes we get wrapped up in our own lives that we forget about others.

And for everyone....I send you a big ole warm hug from little ole me!

Thanks! I got that hug! And it was great! I know of no better gift than that of friendship, and honestly, besides you girls, I only have one other "close" friend who lives in NYC that I haven't laid eyes on in 8 years. She's the prettiest girl alive, though, and the most talented dancer I have known in my life. We are like sisters, both only children, similar parents. Her daddy walked me down the aisle of my wedding :)

My best friend and I have been friends for 37 years now. We talk on the phone several times a week and try to get together at least once a month. We both know that even though we don't get to spend as much time as we used to together with everything going on in our lives all we have to do is call and the other one will come running. And I liked what Carol Sue said about not seeing a friend for awhile and then when you do it's right back to where you left off. My friend Brenda and I are like that.

I've had two dear and very close friends who passed on. Tami died 11 years ago this month and we had been friends since 1st grade. The other one, Adam, died earlier this year and it had been a bit since I had heard from him last. But both of these friends have had a large impact on my life and who I am as a person. I miss them terribly.

I have 2 "best friends", my mother and my sister. Isn't it funny how we can be such bratty daughters and grow up to consider our mothers our best friends??? Never would have seen that coming when I was a teenager! My sister is 8 yrs younger than me but we are really two halves of a whole. We should have been twins! There's no one I enjoy spending time with as much as her!

I true, good, girlfriend is a rare and precious thing. I've had many 'good' friends over the years, and we stay in touch regularly. I met my best friend just about five years ago and we are true solemates. My husband is my dearest friend, but a good girlfriend can get you through a lot that your poor hubby just doesn't get 'cus he's, well, a guy. Your best friend is the gal that takes your kids for a couple hours when your tearing your hair out, or comes over and hour before you have company and wipes down your disgusting kitchen counters for you. My best girlfriend has done all these things (including read my mind!) and I for her. You know your a better person because she is in your world, being a wonderful role model. Life just got better because we formed this bond. And as close as we are, there are often several days in a row when we don't even call...everyone needs their own space too. We have pondered, "What would happen if we had a disagreement?" We both got teary, assured each other that we would always find a way to make up, and stay in the moment. Too many good times to be had, costumes to sew, vegetables to grow....

How is your mother today? I am hoping better. I will check with your site as often as I can to keep up with her progress. Mothers, to me, are something extra special. I lost both of my parents when I was in my 20's. Never got over that. Prayers continue from me to you and your family and mother. Take care.
