Hi! Novice gardener here.
My neighbor took down a tree and now I have a major sunny spot in my yard where once I had none. It's kind of along the side. I thought I might like to plant some giant sunflowers there. Is it too late in the summer to start them from seed?

| It's NEVER too late to plant flowers! How nice to have a whole new bed to play with! If I were you, though -- and not knowing what growing conditions are like in your area -- I would consider planting plants that you get from friends who are thinning out their perennial beds, or, if you can't avoid it, by going plant shopping. Zinnas grow pretty fast from seed, though, as do any of the most popular and common annuals. You might try them for late August/early September blooms. I wonder if the roots from that old tree are going to give you trouble when you start digging, though. You might need to bring in some topsoil. |

Sun flowers grow fast and can be planted anytime up until mid July. I hadn't thought about Sun flowers but I think I am going to plant a whole mess of them in my yard for shade! Thanks for the idea!

I just bought a few begonias at a local nursery and they were 75% off! Now is a great time to get good deals on annuals and sometimes perennials. You really need to water them though since this is the really hot time of summer. Have fun planting your sunny garden!

| you have such a logn growing season in tulsa (compared to alaska lol) that i would just look on a package of sunflower seeds and see waht the growing time is. i jsut planted tuberous begonias that i got dirt cheap, but i dont expect them to do much growing with our short season and cool ground temps. they are pretty no matter what *grin* anther thing you might look into planting is poppys! they are fast growing and so colorful! last year i planted 4 packages mixed with a small amount of sand in a bed that was only 4X6 and had an awesome mass of flowers. they are very easy to grow, especially for a beginner. good luck with your new flower bed! peace connie in alaska |

| I planted poppies this year, about a ,onth ago -- those pretty pastel ones -- and not a single seed germinated. Everyone says poppies are so easy to grow! That's a wondderul idea for Amanda, though. I didn't know that sunflowers were such fast growers! I might try some now, for the birds... |
