My neighbor grew some gorgeous 8-12 foot tall sunflowers to shade his garden. He very generously shared with me the head of one of them, full of seeds, so that I could plant them to shade my garden. I am not planning on using them until next Spring; is there a special way to store them so they will 'keep' well?

I'm not sure how other folks store their seeds but I store mine in an envelope and label it by the name of the plant, then all seeds go into either a tin box or a sealed tupperware container under my kitchen sink.
Now I've heard of some folks freezing their seeds, but I haven't tried that.
I just keep them in a dry, sealed container.

Thanks! I will probably use my Foodsaver to seal them up until I am ready to plant them! I can't wait to see if the seeds live up to their parents' example!!

I've kept mine in the fridge in an airtight container and I've kept them at room temp. both with no real differences in sprouting.

Seeds are supposed to be kept in a dry, dark, cool place. I put mine in labeled envelopes and keep them in a basket in the pantry, which is the coolest room in the house. No problems.

awesome that you are saving them. !! the sunflower heads are so popular with our local wildlife that if I dont run out there to save one for myself, they are gone in a few days.
