when we had the great cat exodus last fall, i really missed all my kitties. then i started noticing that while we had more mice, moles and grasshoppers we actually have more birds. but i never thought they would nest in what most people would call "the house".
it is an enclosed breezeway that we call the green house.
here is what has taken up residence there.

here they are with their kinda punked out hair dos

mop tops is perfect, jonni cause they built the nest on the top of an upside down mop!
i thought the fuzz on top of their heads was some dryer lint i put out their for the mom to build in her nest! but it is their hair. i mean their feathers
the nest is in the green house, an old breezeway that you have to walk to to get to my craftroom. and now the window on the east side has to be left open because it is the only way the mom can get in and out of the house.
this is the closest access i have ever had to a birds nest. when i stick my head out the kitchen door they are right there at eye level.

i have really gone over board feeding the birds this year, but when we were a cat rescue farm, i didnt feed the birds cause i was afraid i might be setting them up to get caught by all the cats we had here. i miss my cats, but i must admit, i am loving watching the birds as well.....and so far, not one single bird has surprised me by coming in the house with a half dead mouse or baby squirrel and releasing it.

yeah, that's the nice thing about birds, right, Frannie? No half eaten little critters at your feet as an offering! Last year though, I had a house wren family who INSISTED on coming inside--guess they took their name literally! I would come home and everything would be turned over in the house from one of our kitties, Stooka, running over the tops of counters, televisions, etc...trying to be on the same level as the bird..and just when I was thinking, "what the....?" I'd hear that fait flutter coming over my head and back again. So, I'd prop all the doors open and grab Stooka, Jack and Pumpy up and lock them in the bathroom and eventually, my bird friends would leave.

Great photos! I have a couple of bird houses in the back, and one was already 'host' to a wren family. Another one is in the process of raising another family. The last couple of weeks I watched a couple of wrens going back and forth building their nest. This week, the female is roosting? or brooding? (don't know the terminology) in the house. I can go up to as it is eye level and the little female just barely looks over the nest. You see the top of her head and her little eyes blink....very cute! Probably by next week the eggs will be hatched.

Wow! How amazing! I would love to put up bird nests but we have about 50 half feral cats in our neighborhood due to a collector and I don't think the poor birds would survive long.

that was our problem as well, alee, except i was the one with all the cats!
we had always been the designated farm where people seemed to dump their kitties, and we would rescue them and clean them up and try to find homes for them. several times the population got out of hand. then last fall, our pyrenes just quit guarding and i guess retired, and the whole farm just sort of changed. we want to get a new pyrenes, but we dont want to do it while cosmo is still alive. we tried to introduce a puppy about a year or two ago, when we saw cosmo changing but it was a disaster. the puppy wouldnt leave cosmo alone and just basically made life miserable for her.
how are things at your new home? fine i hope!
