My friend showed me this lovely crochet that her grandmother made. Isn't it pretty! I would love to create this myself but have never seen a pattern like this.
Anyone have any ideas?

I could write you the directions on how the little circles are made because I can see them.
I have an idea also about the big flower but not sure how to write the directions for it.

Angie, Can you upload a picture of the piece laying flat and closeup??
The outer circles can be accomplished by creating an adjustable ring (loop) and then it appears that for
round 1: there are either a round of single (sc) or double crochet (dc) worked into this foundation ring, fasten to first stitch to complete this round.
round 2: chain (ch) three for first double crochet (dc), (chain (ch) 1, skip next stitch (st), double crochet (dc)) in next stitch..continue this pattern inside the blue brackets all the way around, fasten to first chain three of this round.
round 3:(appears to be a round of Picots) A Picot is a chain three, slip stitch (sl st) into second chain from hook...So to start round 3 begin with a chain three and complete the Picot, once you slip stitch into the second chain from the hook then (single crochet (sc) or slip stitch (sl st) into next stitch, and next stitch also, then do another picot), continue to work within the blue brackets all the way around.
That finishes that little round motif...obviously, this is just me eyeing what I see and thinking of what I would do if it were me...If you have any crochet experience you will figure out how many stitches to put into the first round for the round of dc, chain 1 to distribute properly. It's late and my brain won't go there right now. 
Now for the center flower...there are many variations on this .
I can do these but it will easier for me to find the pattern then try to sit here and write each step..it's a series of rounds with multiples of chains and rounds of (sc) made into the chains and attached around the ring..it's a bit tricky til you do it the first and see how it works..it is not hard..just looks that way
I'll do some looking for that pattern...meanwhile Sunshine may show up and whip out the pattern and know how....she's experienced at testing patterns so I'm sure this pattern is imprinted in her mind!

I just knew you girls would love this! Yes, let me see if I can get more pictures (of the back also) because it is just sooo intriguing!
I happen to love pink but can imagine this is pale yellow maybe or I wonder what all white would look like?

I am sure the center is a rose.
I know that there are several of the free patterns on line that has free directions
It all looks like it is sorta free form crochet; meaning that she may have made it up and didn't have written directions
Looks like she layered the center rose ,
I will have to look at it more to figure it out.
My grandmother use to do things like that; you know free form crochet
she couldn't read directions
she didn't know what free form was,
she is deceased now.
but, taught me the love of needlework along with my Mom( her daughter)
So, she just used the picture in her mind; or someone showed her how.

Angie, the center flower looks like an Irish crochet rose with additional rounds. Usually they have 4 rings of petals, but it looks like on yours they added 3 extra rows. Let me know if you need the pattern and I can e-mail it or list it here if anyone else would like it.

That is certainly a dazzler and if someone does figure out the pattern, please post it. I broke down and got a new steel crochet hook today since I have somehow buried my little plastic envelope of them somewhere in my downstairs sewing pile, I am going to have to start organizing this stuff and i realize labels are the only thing that might save me, however in the past I have put things in the wrong container even though I thought i knew better.
I feel inspired today, it has been warm, sunny with lovely breezes all day and a nice smattering of clouds to liven up the lovely blue of a summer sky.My idea of a perfect summer day, and everything is so lush and green and people's gardens are just exploding with color. I am so glad to live here....Karin

Yes that is an Irish rose all you have to do is find a little one that has 10 petals and 16 rows and that is your Irish rose most do not have that many petals
ring center start
a row of double crochet divided by chains
and petals are usually sc hdc dc then a series of trebles with each new row having about 2 to 3 more trebles in the middle the then dc hdc and sc around
then the in between rows of petals the foundation for the petals is actually a chain that gets a few chains longer each round also sc around the previous post at the end of each petal on previous round.
I know this isn't clear but with out having the item in hand it is hard from those photos (they not close up or large enough) to give you an accurate count of the stitches other than to tell you the basics of how it is done.
As you do the crochet rounds (the other motif)
they start with a chain ring center
then a row of dc
then a row of double crochet with a few chs between the dc's
then a row a picots that look to be sc ch 3 sc in same space around.
make joins with a slip stitch instead of the second ch in the picots

The center rose is made in the style of a Irish tea rose..just found it in my old harmony book..I'll scan it in a bit so you can see it...although grandma's version is much much nicer..it appears that she kept the stitches into the rings of chains (that form the petals)all about the same stitch til the final round of which they angle out a bit..I would think single crochet and half double crochet would be good for the petals.
I just love this..now I've gotta play and see if I can reproduce it..I'll be back later tonight with the pattern and picture for the tea rose I found and then you will see what I mean about the difference between the two.

Here's an even better example..see how all of the rounds of petals are the same in height..that appears to be how grandma's is and gives it that flat cabbage rose effect.
But of course in grandma's she didn't do the round that creates the fancy center...she went straight for the blossom which is really nice..So anyhow in this picture I've posted once the chain stitches are made and attached around the foundation ring you would work sc and hdc into each chain that will form a petal..this keeps the petals low profile so to speak.

Round 6: ( 1 sc, 1 hdc, 7 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) over each 7-ch loop
Round 7: working behind Round 6, make 1 sl st in 1st sl st of Round 6, make 1 sl st in sl st of Round 5, ch 9,(1 sl st in next sl st of Round 5, ch 9) 7 times, 1 sl st in 1st sl st to close
Round 8: ( 1 sc, 1 hdc, 9 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc,) over each 9-ch loop, fasten off.
This will make a rose with 4 rows of peatal. For a larger one I would keep increasing stitches at the same rate.

Stephanie, I would guess that the center rose is a good 2" across and the surrounding flowers maybe 1 1/2"

Ladies, I am following along and really pleased that you all know soooo much more about crochet than I do! 
(But then, I'm not surprised!)
I am going to print off all the directions and go play this weekend and hope to perhaps post a little picture soon! (?)
And, if anyone else is working on this, can I see yours too!
