I know some people do this. Any suggestions? I think I might like to sell my mom's pound cake on my site eventually, and some of her oatmeal cookies, maybe. Just the things that go over really well and is known for. How would you keep it fresh? You think this would work?

You have to have a healthdepartment inspected kitchen and many states require you to be able to provided all of your nutritional information as well as hold a variety of liscences. You would need to see what your state requires.

What a fun idea! It would add even more to the tea-party/ 'have a sit' feel of your site and stuff. I would do as Julie suggested, and check out what laws stand in the way.....but it sounds so neat!

Okay, you just gave me a great idea to play on, work on. I'm a tea fanatic, so going in that direction would be great. I could also sell the linens, and other things. I think I'm onto something. lol!
Thank you, Julie, I'll be looking into it!

Brooke, your store is starting to remind me of a lil shop we have here in Boonville, the Village Mercantile. They sell all kinds of sewing notions, some antiques, and what nots and then upstairs is the tea parlour. Very nice.

Okay, that ain't gonna happen. I can't go putting in a commercial kitchen AND separate it from my home. That is ridiculous. I knew there would be alot of red tape to go through ... Well, I'm just going to the Farmer's Markets .... it gave me a good idea. lol.

Brooke, I did that for a while and rules in TX are very sticky. In our county you do have to have a seperate kitchen, well not necessarily a kitchen but an area with a seperate sink, oven etc. You could convert your garage and set up a seperate sink, oven etc. But you can't have anything else out there, no animals etc. You could try another room and maybe set up a table, sink, and use a bread machine for your pound cake? And do it that way. Use your imagination and I bet you could come up with something. Your husband could even build you a small room off your house, but you would have to do electricity and water for that. Good luck.

I think for now I will just sell at a farmer's market. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. It would've been a fun idea, but I just don't see it as realistic at this time. Maybe I will someday be able to have a little tea room selling goodies in the future!

you might want to check into commercial kitchens for rent. here in napa we have a couple that rent by the hour..or you can sign up for a regular weekly/monthly schedule. fees are pretty reasonable..and much cheaper than building your own. in california, you need the commercial kitchen for farmer's markets too..good luck

Hmm...that's strange...so, wait a minute, you're selling ONLINE, to people OUTSIDE of Texas, possibly, and they're asking you to play by Texas rules?

Last I checked, the FDA regulated FOOD and such, and if your profits come down under $5,ooo/year, there was no regulations....hmmmm.

Another thought, there are sometimes COMMUNITY regulated kitchens for just such a purpose...maybe your extension office knows about such things....

Good luck!

Thanks to all of you ... Zan, Diane (which I love both of your websites, btw, and have them linked to mine ..) and all of you.. those are great suggestions ... I best not stretch myself too thin though.. I might as well stick to getting all this online and not worrying about the other...I'm running behind as it is ...
in the mean-time, maybe I'll make a pound cake or two and trade it or whatever in the bartering forum ..LOL...

Brooke-
I used to sell at farmer's markets too, until NY came down really hard on farmer's markets. I would have to put in a separate commercial kitchen, and I would need a separate water source because I have well water.. which we have tested and it is fine, the water would need to be chlorinated. I know NY is very strict. Hopefully you have better luck at farmer's markets.
good luck!!

Chlorinated?! That's absurd! I don't want clorine in my water. I prefer well water anyway. -shakes head here- Well, I don't think I have to have that. I found that part out. Thankfully, not much on selling at farmer's markets etc here as far as I am aware.
