If you can get to Ogunquit or York Beach those are my favorite places. that is where my husband and I went for our honeymoon. If you are into outdoorsy items the LLBean store in Kittery is HUGE and really cool. Old Orchard Beach is neat too. They have a beachside ammusement park though I am not sure it would still be open in september. If you can go on a Lobster boat tour those are always really cool and I bet your boys would love it. Many of them take you out in the water show you how to pull traps and you even get to see real lobters. Acadia National Park in Bar HArbor is also really great and fairly close by.

Oh, you're in for a treat! I've been going to Maine my whole life - my grandparents lived there. (I live in Pennsylvania.) September will be such a nice time to visit - the weather will be gorgeous and it won't be as crowded.
Camden is beautiful. Last year, for the first time since I was a kid, we visited Mt. Battie, which is just outside of the town of Camden. My husband and kids loved it! (I did too, but I had been there before.) The views are spectacular, and it's fun to hike around.

2 nice day trips that I would highly recommend would be Damariscotta/Pemaquid, and Boothbay Harbor.

Probably my favorite place to go is the Pemaquid/Damariscotta area. Damariscotta is a beautiful town - lots of shops to visit! (Be sure to stop in Reny's!) And if you continue on out to the end of the peninsula, you can visit the Pemaquid rocks - my favorite place in the world! Kids love it! If you go there - when you arrive, there's a lighthouse to the right, and a gift shop to the left. Unless you want to pay to visit the lighthouse, park in the gift shop parking lot - it's free! From there you can walk down to the rocks, and the gift shop is nice, too. A word of caution - don't let your kids wander too close to the edge of the rocks way down at the water - people have been drowned there, not realizing how dangerous it can be to go down too far, and suddenly a big wave comes in. (I don't mean to be scary - it really isn't dangerous at all if you use common sense) Here's a link that has some beautiful photos: http://www.cyberlights.com/lh/maine/pemaquid.htm
Also nearby is Pemaquid Beach - we love to go there. While you're in the area, ask how to get to Shaw's Wharf - a great place to eat! If it's nice out, you can sit on the deck overlooking the harbor and it's soooooo beautiful. (It does get crowded, so you might want to try to go at an "off" time.....although in September it might be better.)

Another nice place to visit is Boothbay Harbor, lots of shops! For the kids, there's a small aquarium ( http://www.maine.gov/dmr/rm/aquarium/index.html) outside of town where they can pet sharks (dogfish - they don't bite) and hold all kinds of sea creatures from the touch tank - my boys love it. In town, there's an old ninepin bowling alley with an arcade - the kids (and DH!) love to play in there while I go "do the shops." On the way to Boothbay Harbor, you'll pass the Boothbay Railway Village (http://www.railwayvillage.org/), where you can ride on old trains and visit old-time stores, etc. And if you'd like to do a boat ride, check out Cap'n Fish's tours: http://www.boothbayboattrips.com/

Ooooh, writing about it makes me want to jump in the car and drive up there right now! We'll be going in the last week of August, so I have a little while to wait...

I hope you have a wonderful time!

Hello Josie! I am in Maine right now, and will be moving here for good in October. Yay!! There are so many wonderful things to do here, I don't even know where to start. I really like Deer Isle/Stonington, and if you head just a bit west of there, you can visit the Good Life Center which is where Helen and Scott Nearing had their homestead. They have a website with all the visit information on it too. Acadia is really beautiful also, and Bar Harbor isn't nearly as packed in September as it is now in the summer. It's a neat place to check out, kinda pricey though. As I guess most things are during the tourism season. Sounds like Jenny has lots of great ideas too, I don't have kids so am not always up to speed on what kids like to do :) No matter what, I am sure you will all have a wonderful time :) Enjoy!!!!

Hi, I live about 15 minutes from Camden, and I would recommend the apple orchards in Hope (out back of Camden)on Rte.105, they have pick your own, but I don't know what would be available in September. My kids always enjoyed that. Mt. Battie, right on route 1 in Camden is definitely worth a visit, great views of Penobscot Bay. Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor is wonderful, especially after tourist season, there are many nice beaches to stop at and walk around. Our all time favorite place is Schoodic Point, where the giant rocks just slope right into the ocean. Just keep those boys close if you go there, it is off route 1 on the way to Bar Harbor. If you're feeling really adventurous head for Washington county, Wonderful beaches to explore there, and Campabello Island is just a hop across the border, and they have amazing beaches to explore as well, Herring Cove is covered with tumbled rocks and spiders, loads of fun. You are definitely visiting at the right time of year....
