I remember when the kids were home, we ALWAYS had a sit down dinner around our table. We all our meals in the breakfast nook off the kitchen, and saved the dining room for events, - birthdays, holidays etc. I always puteverything into a serving dish and we ate family style. Since it's just myself and dh I find that I am dishing up our meals in the kitchen onto the plate for both of us and we were taking them into the living room and watching news as we ate. Now that I don't have TV anymore, I"m going to get back to eating at the table, even if it is just the two of us. How do you serve your meals?

We eat at the table, but since we don't have a dining room and the six of us barely fit around the table there isn't really room for all the serving dishes in the middle. I usually put the salad or veggie and bread there and serve up the kid's plates and pass them out. The kids eat there for breakfast too, but alot of times I make their lunches and send them outside to eat them...at least this time of the year.

We usually eat dinner together.
In fact my seventeen year old son thought it was odd that most of his friends DON'T eat dinner together with their families-hardly ever.
Breakfast-they are on their own. I am NOT a morning or a breakfast person and can barely choke down a yougurt and fruit for breakfast.
Lunch, they are at school and I am at lunch.
So, that is why dinner at home together is required unless someone has to work or a dance lesson. And even then I will try to time dinner around that if at all possible and reasonable.

Thankfully, I inherited the same antique table that I ate at since I was born. Alot of special things have happened at that table and when I moved into this place and Mom gave it to me, the first night I sat down at the table at MY place and ate at it with my husband, I started tearing up and saying, "I just realized the same table I ate at since I was a baby will be the same table OUR kids will eat at!" It's a special feeling. We always eat at the table, although for the most part, like you, we dish out our servings and head to the table (or I will for my husband or vice versa..) It's also nice because I married a man that will help with the cooking! Woohoo!

The kids are long since grown and gone; I gave my nice oak table to one of my daughters when we remodeled the kitchen and somehow eliminated the space for it. DH and I eat in the living room or patio.

My family eats dinner together around the kitchen table, I always set the table for dinner and feel this family tradition will stick with my children when they have their own family. We ate dinner as a family growing up and I feel it has been a good family value. You are right Kate, my sons freinds don't eat dinner together, I wonder how they feel when they are at my house?

I grew up having all meals as a family at the table (although my dad was only there for dinner). I loved it! Often at breakfast and lunch (my siblings and I were homeschooled) those of us who liked books would read while eating, but even so it was a great atmosphere. And dinner was always a good time to share what you'd been doing that day, and just re-connect as a family.
But now that I'm married, I have a real struggle having "table" meals. My husband is one of those guys who only eats because he HAS to--so he'd rather just shovel the food down (and not even notice what it is...a real trial for this love-to-cook girl!) and get over with the meal as quick as possible. I'm glad he's trying to spend more time with me at dinner time, although usually it's sitting on the couch watching a movie while eating...which still isn't quite the same as a "table" meal.
So while we're on the topic, do any of you have ideas for getting back to the Family Table? And for making "table" meals fun, enjoyable, and desirable for your hubby/kids?

I have a question. How many single farmgirls are there? I mean the ones who live alone and cook alone? I find it difficult to sit at the table by myself and, as a result, do my eating in front of the TV watching the news.

My husband is on a rotating shift for work but we always eat at least one meal together as a family at the dining room table. A lot of the time two of them which is easy since we homeschool. Breakfast is usually the one I eat at the computer in the morning since I am up well before everyone else!

We are child-free, but my husband and I have always had dinner together at either the kitchen or dining-room table (unless one of us were away for some reason).

We don't have a table but are in the process of remodeling. currently we use a 1940's style bar/counter that has 2 tiers. It's kind of a pain ,so I'll be glad when we can get a regular table...some day.
We do eat meals together, as my family always did!
If one eats befroe the other, we still sit with the other and talk. |

We live our dinners around the table in the kitchen (fits 4 -5 ok) and the dinning room table (fits 8-9 ok). I grew up eating around the table, and I as well would like my son to grow up like that. Dinner is a special time. TV is not usually welcomed (unless ofcourse...the Yankees are playing). When I moved in with Bill, my husband now, I was uncomfortable with the fact that he and his family didn't eat around the table. They just didn't do it, share meals together. I had to introduce this little change, and it was excepted immediately. We liked sharing a meal together at the end of the day and talking about the day's events that happened...and we still do. I love it.
How about those indoor farmers!!! |

It's just my husband and I, and my kitchen is so small you can't cuss a cat in it, and even though there is a little table and chairs (2), it's not a super comfortable space to eat in with all the dishes etc on the table. So, we eat at the coffee table. Always have. Somedays it makes me insane, and other days I don't even think of it.
That's going to change here, though, soon enough. Making plans for a corner cubby breakfast nook to conserve space and make it usable.

having a tiny cabin with absolutely no room for a table and chairs (or sofa for that matter!) we eat on our laps, but whenever we can we are eating together. we have one easy chair (dads) and 2 foldign chairs and if ya dont want to sit on them there is always our bed which is part of the main room of the cabin. my hubby is on a roating 12 1/2 hour shift so it makes eating together on work days kinda iffy at best. i do homeschool our teenage son but with dad gone for 15 hours at a stretch the days he works we pretty much eat as we can. i rarely even cook on those days. he only works 14 out of 28 days so when he is home we eat together unless son is at friends or we are in town.

We sit down for a family meal just about every night, we are blessed with a large eating space in the kitchen. Now if I only was inspired to cook every night....I always do but sometimes I'm grumpy about it, like today, can you tell?
