I have some chairs that need to be recovered but I want a fairly easy pattern. The chairs have no arms, tall backs and fabric on the back and seat. The seats themselves could really do with some padding, so I was thinking some kind of padded skirt for the seat and a matching back piece that ties on. Anyone have some ideas for this project? Thanks!

Chair seats are usually easy to recover. Tip the chair upside down and see if there are screws holding the seat to the chair. Remove the screws, lift off the seat, and use the old fabric for a pattern for the new fabric. You can also add a layer of foam; if you do that cut the fabric just a little larger. Pull the fabric tight around the seat and staple. Put the seat back on the chair, screw in the screws, and presto! you have "new" padded chairs.

Unfortunately, my chairs are from Ikea and don't come apart like a traditional chair seat. I think I'll have to construct something that I can slip over the chair itself and keep tied into place.

I'm glad to report that I found slipcovers that will fit my chairs for five bucks a piece! I couldn't have purchased material that cheap. Yippee!
