My computer has been having problems and I now have a different email address. I also have to buy another computer as my on/off button is shorted out and it needs fixed.
Also, last night a weasel or some other varmit, got into my chicken pen and killed and took off with all four of the chickens in that cage. Two were new and two were the Australorps hens we put in to cross breed.
I was devastated and was thankful to save the four fancy chickens out of their cage next to that one and put them in with the Australorps about 3-4 oclock this morning.
My car has the alternator out now too so it's a heck of a time, but will survive and be thankful for what I have.
I am missing all of you and hope to get my subscriptions sent to the right email soon. In the mean time, please be patient with me and keep me and the household or should I say farmhold, in your prayers!
Blessings and hugs

Losing your hens must be devastating. Do they roost on the ground? My grandmother's hens had a ladder affair that they roosted on at night. She always made sure everything was shut up and battened down each evening. I remember as a kid following her on her rounds, making sure the hens were watered and fed for the next morning. She may have had varmits, but I was never made aware of them. I'm sorry that your lost them.

Thank you Betty! Yes, they had roosts, but this varmit was determined and dug deep to get in the pen. It was not afraid off the noise going on around it either because the television was loud that night. I have never, in all my years, had something do that to one of my chickens, and so fast!
Time to haul out the old 410 I guess.
I have been a farm girl all my life so this one is a huge surprise to me.
Blessings!
Pauling
Hoping to get many more chickens in our safe pen. I have lots more and am having a great time with them. Will post picture's on my chicken blog when I get my computer up and running again.

Oh, Pauline, how well I know the devastation of losing chickens!! This is the first year I've ever lost so many at once to a nasty night stalking critter. My guess is raccoons. The whole birds were taken and not until the last hen disappeared did I find even a feather AND found were the rotten thing(s-- I think there was more than one) was getting in. I got that fixed, but then I started losing baby chicks to a RAT. At least I'm pretty sure it's a rat. Very NASTY what I was finding. Although, most recently, something got in (In the middle of the DAY mind you) and actually be-headed one of my young birds. I found it's body inside the chicken house and it's head OUTSIDE the chicken house! Now what could have done that you suppose? I've lost a total of 20 chickens myself this season, from older laying hens, to day old chicks and everything in between. So FRUSTRATING!! Hope you find that critter and get rid of it!

I'm stocking up on "Barn Cats." One of them has to get that Nasty rat sooner or later! The raccoons haven't been back. My LGD has been lifting his leg around the perimiter and I've been putting tufts of his hair on the fences and in and around the chicken house. I think those rotten things have gotten the hint! Good luck. ~~Tracy

I am sorryn it takes me so long to respond. Part is because I am using my daughters computer and have to wait until she is through for a few minutes and the second is because I have changed my email and this board for some reason sends the subscriptions to the old one. I have changed it numerous times. That is frustrating and I am about to give up.
None the less, we lost two more chickens today due to stupidity! We were killing them with kindness putting hay on the ground in their run. Stupid because it molds and chickens are very easy to get diseases. As soon as I cleaned it out they were doing great and no more droopy heads.
We do have cats and they were my first suspects as they live under my house most of the time. And then we have Manx cats that come to visit. Since we are in the country I figured the Manx were used to killing their food and then the neighbors that have a pheasant farm moved the pheasants somewhere. I figured the cats were making hay day with them, but it would figure more a family of coons. This probably explains the coon dogs I hear howling every once in a while! Duh, me!!! LOL
I hope that your chickens stay safe for the rest of the duration. I never believed in coon hunting before, but this has got me thinking!
Blessings,
Pauline

Thank you, lol, it always gets better. This is just life. I actually am enjoying myself so much living out here and my grandchildren are around much more than when I was in town. They love walking right up the street to the creek and finding lizards and other critters.
My biggest problem is getting these forum subscriptions sent to the correct address. Ugh! It doesn't seem to matter what I do it doesn't work.
I have been learning how to sew for our charity and make little gowns from the wedding dresses & various gowns donated to us. I am considering making a satin Christmas quilt that is not too complicated for a baby and am knitting a teddy bear to put with it. The bear of course will have ribbon that matches the quilt around it's neck. Hopefully it will look like my mind says it will.
We are getting ready to have a batch of baby guiena pigs if anyone would love some..we also have a female pit bull about 9 months or so that needs a home, gentle and all but we have so many dogs and she needs to be all to herself with her new active family.
The chickens are doing well today and we have a few that, when they choose to, lay an egg or more during the week.
I take it back on the chickens, one is on it's way out. I guess one of the kids picked it up and dropped it so it hurt itself and is dying. Lesson learned here. DO NOT let children play with the chickens with out supervision.
:( :(
Blessings,
Pauline
