Can you still buy marbles?? I can't remember seeing them for the longest time. I will start looking at the thrift and garage sales. Would love to have some old ones. You know those two tall jars I got yesterday at the thrift? I thought those would look nice filled with marbles.

| You can still buy marbles I have found them at Dollar General and also Wal-Mart. For the old ones sometimes they get a little pricey, but I have found them at estate sales , flea markets, antique stores and some times luck up and find them at yard sales. I am trying to fill up a old pickle jar(the big ones). So happy hunting!! |

Nancy Jo....we will all do everything in our power to help you find your marbles! Ha! Ha!...but seriously....I'll keep an eye out for them down here and pick them up if I see any and if "the price is right"...I must admit your prices at your thrift store even beat the ones down here and I thought ours were pretty good!

Nancy Jo~Are you looking for a specific size or color? I know that I have seen them at Hobby Lobby craft stores, and I see them all of the time at flea markets around here, if I knew what you were looking for I can snatch some up for ya!

If you have a Toys R Us, you can get them by the bag full for cheap. I too have filled a glass jar (it is like a bisquit jar with lid, all clear) with marbles and it looks good.

Thanks Anne....I'll put that on my "when I go up North" list....they have a Toys R Us where my daughter lives...the list is getting long! But who am I kidding...after I pay for the gas to get there I won't have any spending money left! Boo Hoo!

Well I would love old ones, but since the jars are now empty I may have to start with a few new ones. Who knows, maybe tomorrow at garage sales I will find some. oh the adventure of it all. Girls, Richard would probably agree with you on where all my marbles have gone, I only admit that a few may have rolled to the side.

Haha - I think we all thought the same thought about Nancy Jo has lost her marbles. Goodness gracious. Well, it's funny that you mentioned marbles as I just got off the phone with my mom. She said that she noticed that her purse was getting heavier and usually it gets heavier from loose change throwing it in there. So she goes to clean it out only to find a bunch of marbles in there. My youngest nephew threw them in there to hide from his big brother. Mom has a huge jar of marbles that they like to play with but they hide marbles from each other. I guess the little feller found a good hiding spot thanks to my mom's expense!!

Thats funny Jess. With little ones around you never know what you might find in your purse. I had several french fries and a straw not long ago. I would rather have had the marbles.

I bought some at Big Lots once. I have a collection of old marbles that have been found around the front porch of our house and our garden spot. Our garden must have been the place where previous tennants disposed of their garbage. We have found marbles there, as well as broken pieces of pottery, crocks, china doll heads, arms, legs, etc. Every time the garden is turned and then leveled down by a good rain, I get out there and begin my search for new pieces. The funny thing is--I have been doing this for 37 years, and the pieces keep turning up!!!!!

Ditto for what's already been said.
Look in any toy section or hobby store.
The expensive ones you find at flea markets are collectible. I have been a collector for many years and love buying up those glass jars in the hopes of finding one gem in the bunch.
As a point of interest, you'll be able to tell hand made from machine made by the pontile marks on either pole. Most but not all hand made marbles have small areas on either pole from where whey were held in place. This isn't a defect. Machine made marbles are completely smooth.
And believe it or not, all those collectible ones have names. Lutz marbles have bands of real gold in them, mica ones have flecks of mica, sulphurs have 3-d figurines in them, ox bloods have bands of brick red. All of these can go anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred! And there are more!

Anna- Thank you so much for the info. I new there was a difference from old and new I just wasn't sure what the telling point was. Now I will be looking.

How interesting to learn all this...I should collect them as I played marbles as a kid and I had gobs of them at one time and I also collected bottle caps from soda bottles...DARN! Wish I'd held on to them...I can't even remember what I did with them all.
So....I guess Nancy Jo...you still have not found your marbles? (It's gonna take awhile to live that one down! Ha! Ha!)

That is funny you said that you have found marbles around your porch and yard. We too live in an old house and as I was setting up our flower beds in the front years ago, I found marbles too. I still find them occasionally while weeding. I think kids played on the porch.

My son is a mad marble collector (the antique ones) They arent hard to find once you start looking for them. I buy them by the jar or bag full often at the antique shops. We just got some black and orange ones, lovely!

My folk's old Victorian home is what got me started collecting. There were marbles unearthed all over the place.
I found one that's called a bullseye agate. It has varying rings in different shades of brown and tan. The actual bullseye part is quartz. I took it into work and showed a few friends who I knew collected. They about fell off their chairs when they saw it and even offered to buy it. So I figured hmmmm there must be something to this. And the rest is history. It has no pontel marks but it is antique and hand made. It retailed at the time for about 30.00. When I still lived in Ohio, Mom and I would get up early and go to the Burlington Flea Market once a month.
We also found a marble guy here in Raleigh. His collection was impressive. |

I guess we know one thing our predecessors did for fun. While digging in a flower bed by the front porch we also found a set of Army dog tags that belonged to someone who lived here before us. He was deceased, so we gave them to his son. It is amazing some of the things we have found--old nails, coins, metal parts from horse or mule harness, silverware, etc. Just a piece of the past.

I bet you can find cheap ones at some walgreen type stores kiddo.. or even Dollar Stores.. But if your looking for some old ones.. you know... the real deal.. just keep an Eye out at yard sales & Stuff.. Now that your looking for them you'll see them everywhere!
of course I bet you'll find yourself bombarded with them from some sweet friends!
