I have found myself a little "Stretched".. to the point that my brain hurts...can you pull your brain muscle? I have been trying t spend time working on my sister-hood badges.. and in there there is a challenge to expand your garden to help provide fresh fruit and veggies for some of the elderly in the community..... so that coupled by....the high cost of things...... plus a recent visit to Palouse Clearater Environmental institute - where they have grouped with others in the community and collectivly they donate to thier local food bank...while we arent able to do that as a farmgirl group.. I did think it would be fun and rewarding to as farmgirls.. donate and then let each other know... maybe either by what we donated or how much.. and at the end of the harvest season tally up... and then next year try to beat our own goals... I dont have a lot of yard.. or garden space.. but I do know that I can "adopt" a couple of the seniors on my street and provide them with fresh berries and produce.............and I know that I can organize those in my chapter and community to do the same.. ( which by the way, will be my article in the local paper this week).... So how aboout a little "excersise" with me......let us know what you will committ to doing.

I have been "sharing" our bounty with folks for many years. When all the peppers come in at once, and you have too many tomatoes, it is fun to share. Just this week I shared tomatoes with my next door neighbor who lives alone, we gave two big bags of blueberries to my daughter and her family, and next it will be sharing the peppers. Our plants/bushes are overflowing. In the early spring, we gave away bags of snap peas to our family and neighbors, and even the fellow who came to fix some wood rot on our house.
Sharing our garden bounty is a great idea, and I would love to see your article when it is published.

Rene what a great idea. When I first started gardening I lived in a small town and I really knew all of my neighbors and they knew me in return. I have found that since I moved into the city almost four years ago I don't have that. But since I think that your idea is such a great one I think that I will set a goal this year to share my excess not only with my husbands co-workers but with the elderly that live in the senior manor across from our house. By early July I should be able to easily fill an extra garden basket with goodies from my harvest as well as fresh loaf of bread.

Christina, I love that...
I have given my excess away in the past as well.. but this year I am thinking ahead.. and planting more.. planning on excess...

You can see my articles at www.prosserfarmersmarket.com - the community paper prints them, but we post them on our website.... I love to write...well the truth is I love to research and interview and then the writing is just an overflow!

I am curious.. we are several weeks behind schedule here in Prosser due to a cold spring. So I am just wondering what kinds of things are you all harvesting right now?

I got a late start here in Nebraska as well so needless to say the only thing I have had so far is lettuce and the black berries from our tree. My cucumbers, green beans and some zuchinni are flowering finally though.
It has been so wet here that the only thing I have in abundance from my garden and yard are mosquitos!

Here in Pasco on my little plot, I have just about finished with the strawberries and the raspberries are coming on. I have green golfball-sized tomatoes and the potatoes are blooming.
