Last night we had the most severe hail storm I have ever seen. The hail was as big as dimes and solid ice. It completely "de-leafed" almost all of my bushes and I don't have any leaves or petals left on my petunias or marigolds. I just wanted to cry. Apparently the hail only affected a small portion, mostly in the Spokane Valley, but we seemed to be right in the "epi-center" of it all. It was so loud we couldn't even hear to talk over it even from inside the house. There were even a couple funnel sightings, though no actual tornados. I think every bud on my 30+ rose bushes was "removed." I kept running the sprinklers, trying to melt the hail, before it froze everything out. Even so, we still have piles of hail as of tonight . . . 24 hours later! This has been the weirdest weather year I ever remember. I hope my flowers will recover!

aww Brenda..a big hug to you.
I had read that you all had some freaky weather up there.
snow and ice this time of year is strange.
Well..lets hope that your roses just took it as a good pruning and that they'll bounce back later with even more flowers..that's my wish for you.
on the plus side..I am so glad that you were safe and no one was hurt.

Brenda, I think we all have been experienced some intense weather across the country this spring.seems like every day there is something on the news. We had the same sort of event this week here in WNY. I would just 'baby' all your flowers and trees and make sure they make it through this summer and next spring after this soaking the roots will be that much stronger!
(always trying to look on the bright side!)
And as Tina said, really, really glad you were not hurt.

Gosh, you sure are getting hit hard out there. I'm glad that you are okay, but your poor plants! I'm sure they will look rough for a while, but they may recover. You just never know.

Its a blessing you house and other high dollars items (car, etc.) weren't damaged. They don't rebloom. May every greenhouse you stop at go to close-out when you arrive. May the next month be the perfect growing conditions. May, at the very least, your zuccini comes back in abundance so every neighbor runs the other way during the end of the harvest. (its a contest around here) And...May you at least be happy with what comes back.

You have really been hit hard with weather it seems like...I'm so sorry about your poor plants. It's terrible to see that devastation...I can't figure out what it is going on with this weather all around the country!!!! I mean, because Global Warming is a myth and all...

I remember in the early/mid nineties weather was wild like this...definitely with the midwest flooding. It does seem like WA is getting hit hard though. Hope that your roses make it...bet they come back better than ever!

Brenda, what a shame your plants took such a beating. I would get as much of the hail away from them as possible. also give them a dose of miracle grow or a similar product( unless they are totally soaked already). Remove all the beat up blooms and leave as much of the plant as possible. Let mother nature do her thing and be patient.Yes you will have to wait awhile for your plants to rebound, but most should. You'd be surprised though, with good weather and some TLC they may rebound a lot sooner than you think. MJ

| SuperThrive, available at Walmart during the spring and summer. Vitamins for your plants. Brown glass bottle with a cardboard backing attached. With the Miracle Gro and such. To look at it, one would think it's a scam, but it really does help plants survive. Still use your normal fertilizers. The nearly $8 bottle lasts a long time, even with me using more than the recommended one drop per gallon of water. |

What a horrible thing to happen to your plants, i bet if you cut them back and keep them watered next year they will be good and strong. I've never suffered a hailstorm doing damage to my plants, but one year a porcupine decided to girdle all my special trees, bird's nest spruce, weeping hemlock, scarlet hawthorne, all my plants I'd babied into wonderfulness. I felt so devastated, it is just an awful thing. You just be good to yourself, they will survive. When i was first married my husband worked at a nursery, and he would always bring home the ailing plants that didn't sell. He'd plant them in our yard and then prune them back to practically nothing. I would cry and protest, but the next year they'd be great.
