I was on a while back and my house got hit by lightening so I'm just getting back online again. Hello to all you Farmgirls! I had a farmette in Iowa for 20 years and now live in a "neighborhood" which is a little hard for me. I really miss my acreage and animals. I hope to get another acreage again some day but for now I will "bloom where I'm planted".
I love these chats and you gals all motivate me!
Welcome to all the other new gals on here too! I would like to start a chapter here in AR eventually...a great way to meet farmgirls here I bet.

Julie - Oh cool!!!! I hadn't seen anyone from AR....you're in the west part? I've only been down here awhile but love it except still getting used to the humidity. I'm about an hour east from Mountain Home in the north in a very small town....the only big store is a Walmart about 20 minutes away else everything is an hour away but it keeps me from spending! Except there's always the internet! It is BEAUTIFUL down here and the people are SO NICE!!!!
Tell me more....do you live in the country? How do you dress for snakes and ticks? I was hanging my clothes out until I got ticks in my clothes on the line from a nearby cedar tree I think. I use deep woods off when I mow and that seems to work but I could use some advice as far as what I should wear to work outside. I'm not afraid of snakes but you guys have some seriously poisonous ones down here so as much as I'd like to hike through the woods I am a little nervous. Also, what about my dog with snakes? Don't get me wrong...I do love it here...they don't call it the Natural state for nothing but I need to get acclimated to things.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Do you have a Farmgirl chapter there? I don;t think we have one around here so I was thinking of starting one.

Julie....I am so sorry about your dog...I just read your blog and I had no idea when I asked you about dogs and snakes. I lost my dog of 18 years when I moved down here and I still miss her but my daughter brought me a pup last summer and she is different than Abby but a real companion. They are each so individual with their own special personalities but I know it was her time and she had a great free life on the farm up north. It was hard for her to adjust to a "leash"...she had never had a collar or leash on in her life.
Kensi was beautiful and my Abby was part golden retriever....I send you peace and love and although you'll never forget her, your wonderful memories will come back and make you smile eventually. Again, my condolences.

Thank you Janice....yes...things are getting better and no one was hurt. I just have to get my money out of the insurance company now. But there were many people down here worse off than me with tornadoes earlier this Spring so I'm the lucky one.

Hey Sandra! I am actually in the central/eastern part of Arkansas. I live right near the town of Searcy. About 2 hours or so south of you. Jenbove who is a moderator here on the forum is from Calico Rock which is just southwest of you not to far I believe. I started a local chapter about a year and a half ago and so far I am the only active member.
I have really grown to love Arkansas too! I have been in Arkansas since 1996 when I left Vermont to go to College in Searcy. I met my husband there and have never left! The humidity is horrible and I am still not "used" to it. We got a pool about 4 years ago and that really helps!
I do live in the country on about 180 acres of land. I am a k12 art teacher at a local school where my husband also teaches. We are on break right now which is great! I had workshops monday and tuesday this week but had the rest of the week off so I really can't complain.
We have horses, dogs, cats and chickens out here. I just got the chickens about a month ago. Two should start laying soon. Chickens can really help with the ticks. I have 3 english mastiffs so I don't let mine roam free so I don't quite get that benefit but they are good for that. I dont really dress a special way to avoid the ticks and stuff. I just try to check myself over when I come in and shower afterwards.
Snakes can be a problem if you don't keep an eye out for them. I really very rarely see them. Kensi of course got bit twice. We have another dog that got bit once and was just fine after some antibiotics. We do live in a remote area though so our dogs are more in there habitat than dogs that live in more residential areas.
Anyway I will shoot you an email so you can contact me easier. I'm so glad to have another farmgirl here in Arkansas. We will have to plan a get together.
Oh yeah no hard feeling about the dog/snake question. It was obviously a legitimate question!!! :)

Hi Sandra! Welcome back! My daddy grew up in Hot Springs and raced horses there as a younger man. I still have relatives there, and in Little Rock--my favorite auntie, Louise had "pullets" in her little urban neighborhood. I don't know where that is in relation to you, but Arkansas was a nice place to visit.

Jonni....Hot Springs is supposed to be really nice and lots of horses...I LOVE horses! I had 2 up in Iowa but they both got old and died but I rode for years and loved them and riding. I'd be in better shape physically if I was still riding...it was the best exercise; I was never in such good shape and probably never will be again! LOL! Hot Springs is quite a ways from here SOuth and west a bit I think but maybe someday I'll make it there...I'd love to visit that race track. What an interesting childhood your Dad mucst have had and stories to tell! I think it is one the oldest racetracks in the U.S....it and there's one in NY too that's older maybe. Hot Springs was a mecca back in the 1800's for the wealthy to vacation at I think.
How are things in Kentucky? Now you are REALLY in horse country! It is HOT here...81 right now but it's the humidity that I have to try and get used to or do you ever? I wear a bandana now so the sweat doesn't drip in my eyes.
How did these people ever manage years ago before air conditioning? Of course we didn't have it when I was a kid but I didn't live in the South either. They are strong stock down here!
Anyway....glad to meet you and you all are my link to the outside world! I am loving this and even though I spend time on these chats, it actually motivates me to get more done when I read what you all are doing in your lives. What interesting and creative people you all are! I'm loving this! Thanks again and we'll probably talk on other topics soon!

Hot Springs is such an interesting city architecturally speaking--the old bath houses are just amazing!!! There are a few still in operation, but overall, the city is rather dead. It's been some years since I've been, but that's what I recall. I can only imagine what it must have been like in it's hayday!!!! My father tells stories that during the times of prohibition (he was born in 1923), his Uncle ran an illegal gambling parlor above his fur store. They had felt top tables and everything that folded up to look like wardrobe steamer trunk!!! That way, when the cops would show (and they usually did), they'd get a tip from the lookout and roll everything up to where it just looked like a storage room at a fur shop :)
I have a lot of photos of the racetrack in a collection of my father's things. I'll see if I can dig some up.
You're SO right about horseback riding--I did a lot of riding on Saturday at a friends farm, on a nice Tennessee Walking horse. He was sure pretty, and what a pleasure to ride. He could turn on a dime!!! But, it's Thursday, and my legs still feel like I've run a marathon!
Things are fab here in the Bluegrass. It's a beautiful place to live, and it's hot-hot-hot today. 90, but not still not as humid as it was last week. We live very close to the Ohio River, and it seems like the closer you are to the river, the less relief you have from the humidty. I think Louisville is about the same in that regard. Every year we say, "ugh...it's SOOOO hot!!" but the great part about it is, it will be over before you know it and our beautiful Autumn season takes its place.
