create hat stands for a vintage hat collection? I have a small collection of vintage hats..and being the "frugal mama" that I am... I would love to be able to display these on hat stands of some sort..that are both nice looking, but..won't break the budget to make.
Any ideas?
I do have a small peg rack that I created using vintage Harrison Fisher type illustrations on it and it looks rather pretty/sweet..but I have more hats than what the peg rack can hold and would like to create the actual hat stand type displays.
So..any ideas ladies?
I also have a collection of vintage purses and thought that how I could display those is to create a peg rack but using old door knobs..wouldn't that be darling?
Anyhow..I look forward to reading about your idea on how to tastefully display these lovelies.

hey Tina, I went to one of those Dollar stores and bought a wooden upright paper towel holder, painted it and the I wrapped poly fiber fill around the top, and using scrap fabric cut in a large circle I wrapped the fabric over the fiber fill and used a hot glue gun to secure it somewhat. I tied a ribbon around the the fabric and glued on bits of trim. Be sure to sew lace or trim to your cut out circle before wrapping it over the fiberfill.
I do haved a pic, unfortunatly it is on my other computer, but the monitor died so I can't get to the pic till I buy a new monitor. oh, fiddles, I will try to sneak down stairs tween loads of laundry & take a photo & send it to you. Hopefully I can get it done tonight.

I am also a lover of vintage hats. I have a few different ways of displaying them, but the least expensive one involves foam spheres and some gorgeous sticks from the yard. I used an oblong planter, cut styrofoam to fit tightly, covered it in moss, stuck the sticks in firmly at different heights, then added the spheres to the top, topiary style. I covered mine in vintage inspired fabrics but more dried moss would work too. Then just adorn with milinery flowers if you like, and voila! Its like the hats are growing in a little garden. I will try to figure out how to post pictures.

Tina, I was wondering the same thing. In fact, last month at the Burlington show, that was my goal--to find one of the old "fixtures" from a hat shop, or department store but I didn't find a one. I have a dove gray cloche from the 1920's with a rhinestone clasp and pheasant feather that just screams to be adored and displayed, but it's still in it's original hat box. I'm wondering about wire.
I know MJ has one on her site, but it's too big for the cloche.

I've never tried this, but it seems like it would work. I've got one of those old fashioned wooden coat racks, the kind that consists of a post on a base with four hooks at the top (one on each side of the square post). If I wanted to hang hats on it rather than coats, I would simply attach more hooks, staggering them down the post to about waist level. I'd guess you could fit 15 hats on a rack like that.

Very smart, Grace!!!! I'm thinking I might do the same thing. I'd just love to get that hat out on display and it's the only one, so why not try the same design. Hope you don't mind a copykat, Kat mom :)
