I don't know if this is an old trick that everyone knows, but it seemed like a miracle to me when my husband thought of it on our camping trip last week. So let me brag on him a little, even if you've heard this before.
We don't own a lantern, just flashlights. It was after dark when we pulled into most of our campgrounds and had to pitch the tent and cook a meal. It was so frustrating trying to set up the stove and get out dishes and food with a flashlight in one hand and a narrow beam of light.
So here's the trick: if you have a flashlight and a large clear water container (we had a gallon milk jug), just set the jug on the flat surface that you are cooking on and set the flashlight up against it so that the beam is shining through the jug. The water diffuses the light and your jug gives off a cozy glow that illuminates a 2-3 foot radius. Just enough light to cook and eat by, hands free. |

Your DH deservers some bragging! What a great idea! My Dad discovered a few years ago during a power outage that shining the flashlight right at the big white refrigerator in their kitchen bathed the whole room with light.

Another variation of this is to strap a headlamp style flashlight backwards onto the milk jug so the light shines through the milk jug!
Have fun!
If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping! |

clever, we have set up camp by the headlights once, but i like this idea a lot better.

I just saw this on Pintrest as well on one of the Camping FB sites I visit... {attach a headlamp style flashlight or flashlight backwards onto the milk jug so the light shines through the milk jug} it will illuminate/diffuse the light... what a great idea.
Another trick is to use those $1 stick in the ground Solar lights,,, we put them in a cluster...to create more light... you can also pop the top part off and put a couple in a large glass jar to give off more light.
