Hi....I'm Kayla! I'm 19, I live on a farm in south central KY, and I milk two cows twice a day. My family also raises chickens, turkeys, pigs, and beef cattle, and we have an extensive garden. Our goal is to live off of the land we have. We moved here from GA (where my Dad was a fireman and a pastor) a few months ago, and we are loving KY! Our animals are raised happy and healthy, mostly grass-fed, and beyond organically.
My Mom found MaryJane's book at a bookstore a while back, and called me on the way home...."You are going to love this great book I found!!" Mom and I both read MaryJane's stuff and I have made some of the aprons...I love making and wearing aprons!
I love bluegrass music, and I play the fiddle, guitar, and mandolin. My family and I play together, and we have sung and played in churches in the south-east.
I also cook most of my family's meals, and I am experimenting with cheese-making. I grind whole wheat to make our own bread as well. All of our dairy products come from my cows, and are made by my mom and I (mostly I!)
I was homeschooled and I graduated in 2006. The first time I ever stepped foot in a classroom was a few months ago...my 15 year-old brother taught a high-school history class and we all went with him. I have three brothers, ages 15, 9, and 6, all of whom are homeschooled as well.
I am a stay-at-home daughter, and I would like to appretice under a traditional midwife sometime in the future. I am also learning everything I can about being a wife and mother, hoping that that time will come before too many years! No, I don't have any prospects yet! Never had a boyfriend. ( I love saying that...it just shocks so many people!)
I love to craft just about anything...mostly knit and crochet things, but I also love to sew.
And I think that about sums me up! My Dad says that it would be quicker to tell people what I didn't do!

Hi Kayla, I'm just one town over from ya in Greensburg. So glad you found Mary Janes Farm! Sounds like you are a very busy young lady and a quite talented one at that! I was looking on your webpage and I admire all the work your family puts into their wares - my dad is a blacksmith too!!! Keep up the good work and come see me sometime!

Hi Kayla! It's nice to meet you. I'm so glad you're here-I think you're going to like it. Your family has a great web page. My uncle was a blacksmith and while I can shoe horses, I could never do all the stuff he could do. You guys have a great place-I hope you feel welcome here :)

HI Kayla--I live half way between Columbia and Greensburg. I enjoyed looking at your site. I make aprons as well--I use to do smocking, but haven't for a long time. I always thought (and still do) that smocking is so pretty.

I live between Columbia and Greensburg. I homeschool my three children, two of which play violin. I love to sew, garden, fish and ride horses. It sounds as if we have a lot in common. I will visit your blog and invite you to visit mine as well.

Kayla - welcome to the farmgirl group! Gosh...you sound like the younger version of me with your interests (bluegrass, mandolin, crafts, farming and more...)! Actually I'll be 28 in a few months. I know all about Columbia as I use to make a pitstop there from my old hometown over to my aunt Wilma's house (Miss Wilma on here). I always loved the Dairy Queen there. I still know a few folks down that way. Wonderful small town.

WOW...thanks for all of the great replies! I've been quite busy here lately....my Dad and brothers had to make a trip to GA a couple of weeks ago, and about the same time, my mom sprained her ankle. So for a few days, I had to take care of all of our animals (quite the chore...took me two hours morning and evening!) and do everything inside as well. Thankfully, the boys weren't gone for very long! I've still been doing pretty much everything inside, as well as milking out 7 gallons of milk a day, because my mom is still on crutches and can't do anything.
I got a bunch of cheesemaking supplies in last week, and yesterday I bought "the" cheesemaking book, so I will be getting into more of that soon. This morning I had 16 gallons of milk in the fridge! Anyone else here make cheese? I already make mozzarella, ricotta, cottage, and those of that nature, but I'm going to start making hard cheeses next.
It's been a while since I made my starch, and I've only done it once. The house we have moved in to is smaller than our house in GA, and I don't really have a room yet (we're building on...soon) so most of my stuff (everything except the yarn I absolutely couldn't live without!) is still in storage. All that to say that I think the book I got the recipe out of is in a box somewhere under a lot of othr boxes...somewhere! The book is entitled "Mrs. Dunwoody's Excellent Instructions for Homekeeping: Timeless Wisdom and Practical Advice." A fascinating book!
It would be great to get together with other farmgirls...my mom and I would like to get more information about the chapter nearest us....how would I go about that?

Hey Kayla, to find a chapter near you go to the home page then scroll down to start or join a chapter click on that then once on that page go to chapter search. Hope this helps.
