I've been making lists of things I'll need to buy when I move--kitchen things, bathroom stuff, furniture, etc. And it's becoming a GIGANTIC list!

I have the basics, but it's still an overwhelming list of things, so I thought I'd just post here and let y'all know that if you have anything you might be getting rid of, I may want it! LOL I can pay shipping on things, and if I come up with anything to trade that you might like, I'd throw that in, too.

I'm also lurking on craigslist and freecycle, so hopefully I'll come up with some things without breaking the bank, lol.

Here's the some of the list I've come up with this morning--kitchen stuff:

--> Glass mixing bowls
--> Drinking glasses
--> Dinnerware (plates and bowls)
--> Pots and pans
--> Utensils--knives, spatulas, serving spoons, etc.
--> Measuring cups and spoons
--> Crock pot
--> Dishtowels, dishclothes, hot pads

Thanks for checking this out, farmgirls. :)

~Jodi

Jodi- before you buy the $$$ stuff, check out the local Salvation Army and dollar stores. Our dollar store sells some nice drinking glasses and I got a nice set of fancy dishes from Salvation Army for $3.50

I was going to suggest the Salvation Army or any thrift for that matter, as well. Ours here has tons of just the kind of thing you're looking for.
One thing about buying drinking glasses from the dollar store though - make sure they are of reasonable quality. I bought a set of six and ended up throwing them out. The glass was so thin that putting a dishcloth into them when washing them caused them to break. Very dangerous.

I have extra dishtowels, dish cloths, and hot pads. I made a bunch for a fundraiser for mother's day baskets. Send me your address and I will send some to you.

Diane- That's a good point about the glasses. Luckily, our dollar store has those really heavy "bar" style glasses. I even got some leaded crystal wine glasses from there!!

I sent you an email, Angie.

I may stop by some thrift stores and see what I can find, too. It's hard to get to one around my work schedule, because it doesn't seem a lot are open in the evenings and on Sundays. I do have Mondays off starting next week (hopefully), though, so I'll have to go shopping. :) I can't believe you found crystal glasses at a dollar store, Alee!!! Crystal is one of my fetishes, lol... I love the way it catches the light.

Gee Alee, your dollar store certainly sounds better than the ones we have here. Here we just get the cheapest of cheap import stuff.
Jodi, let me know if there's anything in particular you can't find or need. I just LOVE an excuse to go to our thrift stores and I'm pretty sure I can put together a decent bunch of cooking utensils for you.

Diane- They get all sorts of things! I have gotten really expensive shampoo and other hair care products. They get things in odd lots though, so for instance when a name brand changes packaging they might get hundreds of one item in- and then you never see it again. One year I got a bunch of those Biore nose strip things there for $1 a box where they are more like $5-6 in stores.

They also have some really pretty dishes sets, but I can get a full set of dishes (corning ware type) at Wally World for $8.99 where as I would have to pay a dollar per piece at the dollar store which would add up really fast for bowls, plates, saucers and mugs for a 4 pieces set. Sometimes there are things that sound like an awesome bargain until you do the math out. But I still think I got a steal with my wine glasses and drinking glasses :D

Here is the website for the chain that I am talking about. If you need large quantities of a certain item you can order it. http://www.dollartree.com/

Actually- if you order it by the case it's not such a bad deal... For a place setting for 8= $24 and free shipping if there is a dollar tree that you can pick it up at.

Aw, it would have been fun if I could have made it up in time for yours, Alee! Sounds like we're both going through the...fun...process of moving, lol. The dollar store website is great, though! I love the Coca Cola glasses they have on there! Soo cute! And cheap--that's always a plus, lol.

Jodi,

I have several sets of placemats and napkins if you are interested...what are your colors/theme for your new kitchen?

DH and I are transitioning between two houses for a while, and I have picked up a lot of things at the thrift stores to tide us over until we get all our belongings under one roof again.

Jo, I'm doing whites and such as the base color, so I can accessorize with any color, maybe even rotate them through the seasons and holidays and such. I hadn't even thought of placemats and napkins when I made the list though, lol--thanks! Email me and let me know what you'd like for shipping/trade.

Jodi, we use canning jars for drinking glasses. Not terribly "beautiful", but they fit our lifestyle and they are easy to replace. And they are very farmgirl! I just got tierd of bought glasses breaking so easily!
Try yard sales for theose items. Also, does your area have a craig's list? You'd be surprized what people have to get rid of free to cheap!
Good luck,
Sharon

Hi all, I hate to be the naysayer but the dollar stores are only full of made in China things. I recently received an email (which I checked on snopes to see if it was true) and there were pictures of a womans foot who has swollen up and had a rash and it was because the lead paint in the FLIP FLOPS she bought at a dollar store.

One of our local channels did an expose on the dollar store dishes, they ran tests on dishes from there as well as other stores and the lead in the paint on the dollar store dishes was way over the limit our government allows.

Sorry ladies, but the dollar stores do not support the way of life we all hope to live or are already living. I quit going to dollar stores over a year ago. I have not missed shopping there at all.

I know with the economy as bad as it is that we all want to save money, but I just can't support the $1 stores.

Some people look for happiness, others create it!

Sharon, our local "Cousins" restaurant uses pint jars as their water vessels. Maybe not particularly elegant, but Cousins is a family restaurant. Good food, not necessarily "Fine" dining.

I think using jars looks cute, country, and homey. Very nice.

And you're definitely right about dollar stores... you have to be very careful about what you purchase. The best bet with those stores is buying name brand things that were bought by the store as surplus, or when labels change, like Alee said.

I KNOW you can find all these things for very little at a local thrift store. I bought a cast iron DUTCH OVEN at mine last summer for $6. (foolish mortals!) I also bought a crock pot there too. We also use canning jars to drink out of. I think they are GORGEOUS. and we have other glasses. ;)

I will look in my kitchen and see if I have anything to spare for you dear... Good luck!
