We are going to be buying a grill sometime soon, and I wanted to see what kind others liked. I am not sure if we want gas or charcoal. What are your opinions on either, and what kind do you have? Any special features? I am very excited about grilling season!

We have a basic blue weber kettle charcoal grill. I love it. We used to have a gas grill that was given to us by my mother and frankly, I just didn't like the taste, or the hassle of getting the tanks (or giving back the tanks) and I really like the flavor of charcoal, and cooking salmon over (wet) cedar planks over a flame. I think our grill was $65.00.

Second the Weber grill. I have a second hand one. It is old, but I would not trade it for a gas one.

We atarted out w/ a small charcoal Smokey Joe (think table top.)
And this was fine, but I never could get the hang of starting the briquettes. It was usually hit or miss, and I prefer to not use lighter fluid if at all possible.

Then last year, a friend was down sizing and GAVE us a Char Broil with 2 small propane tanks! I guess it sells for around 100.00 at Lowes Hardware.

It's nice to finally be able to spread out all our food.

It can easily cook for just 2 people like us, or a family of 4.

The warming grate on top is a nice feature too

I used to have a Weber Kettle too, but after 20 years it fell apart last fall when I was moving it to its winter storage place. Loved it because we could put citrus leaves or apple branches on the coals to give the meat a great fruity smokey flavor. Don't care for the gas either for all the same reasons mentioned.

Just bought a new one this past weekend from Home Depot. Forget what brand, but it's got a rounded top and a chimney with a little smoker box on one side and wooden shelf on the other. It kinda looks like a black drum laying on its side. Not bad for $159 plus they are putting it together for FREE

Check out Traeger grills from Oregon. It is a smoker that uses wood pellets, but you can get the temperature plenty high enough to grill a steak or hamburger. What we like is there is no open flame, so no catching your food on fire, and you can slow smoke a chicken or ribs or a brisket that will rival anything from Memphis or Texas.

I'm outnumbered here, obviously, but I'm a gas grill freak
For one, I'm terrible at getting the briquets started. But the biggest reason is that I became a fan of Bobby Flay and I read some of his cookbooks. The versatility of the gas grill, regulating the flame and temperature make for a greater variety of recipes, not just burgers and dogs.

I'm a charcoal lover myself. I had a gas grill once a long time ago & had a terrible time with it. Right now I'm using a old gas grill without the gas. I just put charcoal in it instead. I hope to buy a new Weber this summer, just waiting for those sales to start!

I have a tiny little hot pink Weber charcoal grill. It hasn't been used. I am afraid to do it by myself. I am a klutz, and know I will start a fire.

Growing up my Mom and Dad had a lime green one. They passed it on to my Aunty and bought a huge gas grill.
Guess what they decided they liked better?
Yep, the cheap standard Weber charcoal.
Now they own a black one, and use that more than their gas one.

We got a new one last year. It's a Weber Genesis S-320. Runs on gas, has a burner beside the grill, and is awesome to use. We can cook the whole meal outside if we want to. It comes to temperature very quickly; no waiting around for the grill to heat up during weeknights when we're tired and hungry. And then it shuts down when we're done. No worries about babysitting the fire until it's out.

With the innovative heat grates underneath, we have never had any grease flare ups. So you can feel okay about walking away for awhile and not worrying about incinerating your dinner. Plus it has lots of accessories available that we use, such as a rotisserie, a slotted pan for grilling veggies, and a remote control thermometer so you can keep an eye on it even when you're not there. We often put a cut up chicken on one side, and have some coarsely chunked peppers, onions, and mushrooms that we brush with olive oil infused with garlic, oregano, and thyme in the slotted veggie pan beside it. With a big long baton of garlic bread heating on the warming rack, hey, you go straight from the grill to the picnic table!

We've been very pleased with it.

Well, it sounds like Weber is the hands-down choice as far as brands go, but I am still torn about gas vs. charcoal. Growing up, my mom always used a charcoal grill. Once they got a really nice gas grill, but she just hated it, so she sent it to live at my dad's office. I really have no experience actually cooking on either type. I like that with a gas grill, you don't have to wait around for the coals to get ready, but, I have this insane fear of blowing myself up when I ignite the thing!

I have always leaned towards charcoal for that reason, but last night my husband said that if I decide on charcoal, he will just make one. He is a very good welder and I am not sure what design he has in mind, but I am sure it would turn out great. BUT, he is also a farmer and very, very busy this time of year and I probably wouldn't get the darn thing until Labor Day!

I think we are going to Lowe's in the morning to check out our options. Thanks for all your inputs!
