I jsut finished cutting my front yard grass (pushed mowed it!), and I realized that my front porch is woefully empty and plain. I'd like to put something out there ... right now I just have a rocker I don't sit in. I have some handmade plant stands that I would like to use (with plants in pots on them, of course). Mostly my problem comes when I look at what I put out there, it looks like I've just put a bunch of stuff... it never looks pulled together. I want it to look inviting.
What's on your porch (whether it's front, side or back)? WHat stays year-round and what changes with the seasons?

kim, great topic! We have a 3 seater wooden rocker, a garden bench my dad made for me, my bunny midnight, my dd's bird (who comes in the house at night) a saddle on a stand, quilts on a ladder, and i just started a container garden on the porch as well so there are tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. it does not really look put together, but we like it oh and there is a dinner bell and a fan.

I just posted pictures on my site a few days ago of my front porch. If you never sit in your rocker put a big plant in it. Put plants up and down your steps.Plant stands always look nice with some vines added to hang down. Hang some baskets up and put plants or vines in them.

My front porch is rather small....none too cute right now for sure. I did pot up two different pots of pansies...one I put in my willow planter and one is a strawberry pot...love how that looks..and I have a couple other plants waiting to be planted...and two white chairs. I do sit in them sometimes...late afternoon when the sun isn't so hot on that south facing porch. I will get more planted out there in the next couple weeks..and something bright and hanging for sure...probably petunias..I love petunias!

Unfortunatly my front porch is a holding bin right now. I have some milk crates out there and a few plant pots, a blanket for my dog to lay on. It's only about 4 foot square so not a lot to work with. I am hoping to have a pretty patio (if we have one) garden once we move.

My porch, glassed in for winter, has yet to have the screens put on it. I'm hoping to get my son out here tomorrow so he and his sister can put them up ...We have a great old outdoor sofa, though the cushions desperately need new canvas on them, a couple, old wicker chairs, a big old hoosier like cabinet, and the best thing of all, my old apple tree, which I had a friend turn into a cat climbing tree. He put a base on it and topped off several big branches with round perches. It had been in the back yard, but was getting too big and blocking the view of the back field (one of my favorite things to gaze at} , but it was such a wonderful shape i didn't want to just use it for firewood. Of course a t the moment I also have a few big rubber totes of fabric out there, and they've got to be relocated so we can enjoy the porch as soon as it really warms up...porches are just the best.....Karin

My front porch has a black wrought iron table with two mactching chairs that have black wicker backs and seats. A black wrough iron love seat with matching coffee table. Three candles, three tomato plants ready for planting in my garden, a snake plant, two big green ferns, two terra cota window boxes, a statue, a bronze bell from Cosanti in Arizona, four chimes, and my big farmer black mailbox sitting a a wrought iron stand.
I need to make new cushions for the loveseat and still need to add some more flowers. I have a garden in front of the porch with two holly bushes, irises, a big hosta, and an antique marble hitching post.

| My backporch has a swing that my late FIL made me. It hangs on a frame that my hubby made. I have a black iron table with 4 chairs, my grill and a big pot of plants by my back door. My welcome mat is always out and you go on a winding walk path to get to it. The smell of fresh cut grass will meet you, along the a veiw of our pond with 4 baby wild geese on it. If you look to your right as you pass ny door to get in, a new mother bird will fly at you. She decided the best place to put her new nest was on my grapevine on my door. The babies hatched on Monday and now she will fly at you if she feels your taking to long to get in. Over the fence right off the porch you will see the young cattle playing. Also in the view you will see flowers in bloom and birds at the feeders. Thanks for your visit. Sherry |

Mine needs some dressing up. Now that it's warm, I can start putting some potted flowers out there. I have a heavy 6 foot home-made bench on the front of the porch with an empty twig basket on one side and an old nail barrel on the other side for a table. I have a maroon fleece blanket draped over one end with a couple green pillows on it. The porch swing which is right on the corner of my "L" shaped porch needs the blanket and pillow I remove from it every fall and there is a log next to it for my tea. On the long side of the porch is another park-like bench with a green plaid blanket draped over one end and one green pillow and an old red and white chair with a basket full of really big pinecones next to it. At the very end of the porch, where nobody ever really goes, is dh tools and the trash can (ick). In the middle of June, I take all of my house plants out there for the summer and the ficus and red dragon dreacena (sp?) really dress it up.

My porch runs the length of the back of our house. It is about 10 feet deep or so, and wehave a white swing, 4 wicker chairs, one wicker rocker and two tables, one small round with a lamp, and one rectangle for eating. I also have a baker rack plant stand. All are white. I have red/green cushions for all and some throw pillows, too, that come in and out as weather permits. I loved it when I added the lamp, as it looks cozy when it grows dark. All the Christmas cactus live on the porch, because they seem to like the shaded light and humidity. The door into the house I painted red, so it looks nice with all the rest. I have a white house. We use our porch a lot, and I am glad it is so big, and wish it were bigger. I stopped having hanging ferns because they seemed to die there, and then I had a hanging brown thing. Not good!
I advise you to think cozy. Make it a place you want to sit in for hours. I see you are in NC. I love Rutherfordton, I have a cousin there. Porches in North Carolina can be the best - good luck with yours! I have seen friends' North Carolina porches with twig furniture and loved that.

I just love reading about everyone's front porch. I dress my front porch up like an outdoor room even though it is completely open.
We have a rocking chair front porch that runs the length of our home. Our porch swing has a quilt hanging over it with some cute (but washable) pillows. Two wooden rockers are joined by a large 20 gallon crock that I've converted to a little table with a lace cover and a small lamp. Baskets hold books and bubbles and jump ropes. Near the door we have an antique wooden chair (a $5 find) and an old crate that we use as a little side table. A potted geranium tops it off.
I love porches with lots of flowers and really need to add more to mine. It just makes a porch so welcoming and warm. Nancy Jo's porch is so sweet ~ makes me want to visit.

| My front porch is probably the most relaxing "room" of all. We have several rocking chairs but the theme is old vintage items. We have everything from from old farm stuff, tools and signs hanging on the wall. We also have old wooden crates that we have to put other old items on. When I figure out how to post pics I would love to share some pics with you all. I use old quilts and linens. braided rug. Very peaceful to sit out there at night especially. |
