I am looking for herbs that are supposed to help ward off postpartum depression. While I am feeling pretty good a week after this birth I did have a lot of anxiety after my last birth and it lasted months so I am hoping to find something that can keep this away this time. I talked to my midwife who suggested Fish Oil, which I have been taking but am wondering if there is anything else? It must be safe while breastfeeding. Thanks!

Maybe try vitamin C. It should be safe for the baby and it should lift your mood somewhat and give you more energy. Be sure to ask you doctor first though. Oh and make sure you get a little sun everyday. Staying in the house cooped up with a new baby can really get to you after a while.

I am SO glad you are including this subject on Mary Jane's Chat!!

Please be sure to talk about any concerns with your mood in the year post partum. Sometimes nursing your baby is a natural antidepressant and when you wean, you experience a post partum anxiety or mood disorder at that time?

You are not alone!! It is not your fault!! You will get better, just keep asking for help. Insist on help from people able to give it to you.

An excellent resource: http://postpartum.net/resources/

If you know someone who may be dealing with emotional changes after having a baby...How can you help?

Encourage her to talk about her feelings, and do not judge them.
Help her reach out to others. Help her find support and healthcare.
Help her cope (practically and emotionally).
Pitch-in before she asks.
Offer reassurance, positive feedback, and patience.
Have confidence in her strength and recovery.

Hope this helps!! God Bless!!
