Come August, a group of workers at our local Texas Roadhouse in San Marcos, Texas, are packing up their spatulas to bring dinner to thousands of troops overseas in Iraq for 10 days. Although they have the food cost covered, each individual must raise enough money to buy their tickets from Texas to Kuwait and also help cover the costs of the actual shipment, which will include food, gift baskets(with electronics and comfort items) and some special treats for the troops. I need some fundraisers ideas for upcoming local events. What sells well? What makes the most money? These kids are working their bums off to raise money. Thanks.

What a great idea Heather. Is there any way they could approach the airline compagny they plan to fligh with and ask for help ? If 10 or more book on the same flights, in and out Kuwait, the flight compagny usely give them a discount up to 10%. Same with the cargo cost, have an estimee for it and knock at all doors, some flight compagnies are cheaper than other and they may end up with a full package, seats and cargo for a reasonable price. They aren't many compagnies that fly to Kuwait : Delta, Continental and KLM for sure.
Maybe if they blog, they could ask for donation of free airmiles from frequent flyers.
A huge bake sale with samples of the dishes they plan to cook in Iraq ?
Let me know if I can help when they arrive in Kuwait. I might be in France at that time, but I will try to have contacts people for them.
If you have any idea about the dates, let me know please. August is one of the worse month to be in the Gulf, because the waves of heat can reach 130 F.

HA!! They are headed over in August because school starts back up and a lot of them are college students. But, they will survive. Lots of water and baby wipes. Plus, they are from Texas, so hot is all relative!! Thanks. : )

Heather, there are slim chances I'll be in Kuwait in august but some of my friends will be and I will make my possible to have a little welcome comitee at the airport if I am not there in person. But I can help before they fly. I am leaving for our holidays mid-june. That leaves us some time anyway.
Young people are amazing and I am sure lots of kind hearts will hand out some help a way or another.
A young cousin of ours had a trip planned to Europ and had to come with the money for their own trip. They did a spaguetti night, a few bowling evenings, where they doubled the entry fees. Mainly the events were organized through school, and the money was shared between the whole group. Parents helped and some of the places where they worked gave money as well.

Yeah Heather, that is what I was thinking, like Corinne, a speghetti night makes big bucks for our youth. They make speghetti meals in take home boxes and sell them outside church on Sun for people to take home for lunch. You can also check places like "Mr. Gatti's pizza" they will hold a fundraiser night for your cause and part of their income that night gets donated. Car washes are always money makers...People in Texas like to have clean trucks! ha! And a bake sale is good too. Hope this helps!

I sold gift baskets for mother's day with a selection of homemade items in them. You could do something for father's day. If you sell the baskets for $25 and keep the actual cost under $10, it works pretty good.
We do lots of fundraisers for Relay for Life,Northwest Burn Foundation and the Firefighter's stairclimb.
The spaghetti dinner idea with a silent and live auction did well for us.
Bingo, especially if you have a local club like the Eagles who will host it for you, those do well.
Car washes are always a good one around here.
If you do an event, have a raffle, or a few prizes where it costs a dollar to guess and the person can put their guess in a bag next to the item of their choice. We had a bottle full of candy to guess the amount with about 8 prizes ranging from garden baskets to a tub full of Thomas Kempers rootbeer, we pulled in over 150 dollars just on that.
If you can sell something at a community event, even bottled water for $1.
You could use the flamingo idea and change it up. A church group had a fundraiser where they "flamingoed" someone's yard with a note saying they would be back in two days to pick them all up and if you wanted to "flamingo" someone you could for $25. Other groups have done hearts, flags, baked goods.
Our church youth group is selling plush pippin pies to raise money for camp. The boys have done a bark fundraiser, get the bark donated and then go spread it for the people for a price.

Our 4H group did good with fruit sales, i bet cheese would do good too. I know some who have done candles, calendars, and our bake sale also does good. Maybe even BBQ?? Good luck!

Oh yeah! The flamingo's that is such a cool fundraiser! and sooo much fun! Great ideas!! Heather, you'll have to let us know what they decide to do and how the trip goes. I would love to hear!
