It appears that our little city has an ordinance stating "no livestock" and considers hens to be such. Justin and I wanted to check into laying hens, just for an egg source, not slaughter.
I'd like to challenge the ordinance, or at least have it come under review...there is a farm about a mile from us as the crow flies that has dairy cows, and we hear them constantly. And, according to neighbors, about 20 years ago, some folks had hens in the neighborhood.
With all that we are learning about our food sources, you would think that they might be open to amending such restrictions...
I found the website City Chicken and thought she might have some ideas about how to present a good case to legislatures. Our city leaders are just a bunch of bumpkins, really, but I bet I could at least get it looked at.

Go for it Jonni! If you aren't going to have roosters, then hens are less noisy than dogs and cats.
I would fight my city council too!

Well, I figure, if I can bring compelling argument about our food sources, and show some factual information about the areas surrounding that allow them, then I might be able to at least get it for review and eventually amend the ordinance to allow laying hens. The city ordinance guy is supposed to call me tomorrow (he's out today) and I figure, what the heck. If he says "no" then I'll say, "how can I get this before a review board?" I bet he won't count on that ;)

Jonni- I'm lying low here with my girls.:) I am researching what it will take to make changes in our ordinances before I make the challenge to, what I think, is a ridiculous restriction on backyard flocks. I agree with you about using the argurment on food sources and self-sustainability. If we are able to make our homes and yards productive without disrupting the balance of the neighborhood, then why shouldn't we be allowed to? I really see no reason why you should not be able to keep a small flock, enough to provide for your family, as long as you maintain them well and keep their yard clean. I go out every morning and clean the hen house. It's so small, it's like cleaning a litter box. lol If I can make a go of this, and still keep the neighbors happy with small gifts of eggs now and then, I think I will have a better shot of getting approval.
Ovbiously I am a believer in the "do it now, ask for forgiveness later" school of thought.

Karin, I am in that school of thought, too, usually...I would hate to have to get rid of them if someone said something. We are, however, attending a back yard chicken keeping class on Friday night given by the extension service. It's called, "Have you hugged your chicken lately?" and Jus said, "Scr** it, we're going anyway, and I'll just build them a little house to boot. If the idiot kid two doors up can ride his "illegal" four wheeler all over, then we can have 2 hens."
I tend to agree...and I like our campaign, Karin :)

| I say do it too, if you keep it low key, you shouldn't have any problems.. As you & I have talked about before, I am somewhat in the same boat & no one out here really cares, as long as you keep things neat & don't let you animals roam all over. |

*Update* I talked to "Officer James, Code Enforcement" and I think I might have got off on the wrong foot when I laughed at his title "Officer". No matter. He was a dork, just like I expected him to be, and when I said, well, there are ways to amend laws or portions of the law, he said, "Well, you have to throw out the whole law and start all over, and I doubt the city's going to be interested in doing that..." (ENTER: saracasm and machismo)....So I said, "no doubt when you called, you noted I work for a law firm. I prepare zone change applications daily, and the results are what we call "Amendments"." Dead silence. Then I said, "well thanks for your time....Officer." and I hung up. Looks like I'll be going for my zone change application this week.
In the meantime, I called a poultry farm about 3 miles from us with free range chicken/turkey and eggs. I call, place my order and pick it up on Saturday. Eggs $1.50 a dozen instead of the $2.99-$4.00 at the grocery. Sounds good to me!!!!

I'd say his officer title has gone to his head. I still haev nit heard from my commissioner. I have a feeling that I will not. So, it'll be me and my illegal chicks in the backyard, I guess.
If you can get your eggs for $1.99 a dozen, that's a great deal. My friend sells them for $2 a dozen for small, up to $4 a dozen for extra jumbo.
