We'll be there in early June for our grandson's graduation from Marine Corp Boot Camp ... from looking at a map, it seems like Charleston is just an hour or so up the coast, but are there any other sights you would recommend? We'll be travelling the I-95 corridor from, and then back to Virginia. I just thought we might spend an extra day/night on the road if there are some things to see.

Thanks!

Jo

You are going to be so impressed with your son's graduation. I have had the pleasure of going to two graduations, and each time I have been incredibly moved by the ceremony. I've not been to Beaufort to sightsee, but Savannah is not very far away from there, and it is definitely worth a trip. Especially to Fort Pulaski and Tybee Island. This link may help http://www.beaufort.com/. Click on the calendar bar to see if there are any events while you are there.
I hope you have a wonderful time. And bring lots of tissues to the graduation.

Ohhhh yes!! You'll be 45 minutes from ME!! How cool is that!
How great! Be prepared though..unlike Virginia Junes, South Carolina/Georgia Junes is very hot (due to the humidty and just gets worse till September) Savannah is only about..ohh 20 minutes from Beaufort and Charleston is an hour.
When you drive down, once you get off 95, Charleston will be an hour's drive on 26E. Beaufort a 30 minute drive on 17S/21S and Savannah a 20 Min drive also on 17S.
Charleston is truly a lovely lovely old city to see. You can do a horse and buggy ride around Charleston, or on foot. (The houses are to die for!) City Market is a great place to walk about. It's for 'cottage' industry, and most items will be handmade by South Carolinians. I go just to look!
Here's some history of the Market:
MARKET AREA HISTORY
Charles Cotsworth Pinckney ceded the land on which the Market is built to the City of Charleston in 1788. He stipulated that a public market be built on the site and that it remain in use as a public market into perpetuity.

To fulfill this requirement, the low buildings that stretch from Market Hall to the waterfront were built between 1804 and the 1830's. These originally housed meat, vegetable and fish markets and rented for $1.00 per day -- or $2.00, if the space had a piece of marble to keep the meat or fish cold. Butchers were known to throw meat scraps into the streets, attracting many buzzards that were nicknamed Charleston Eagles. Since the 1970's, the original sheds and the areas opposite the Market on both sides have housed many small and unique shops, each with its own flavor, history and character. Some of the products for sale include locally crafted sweetgrass baskets, clothing, artwork, jewelry, local souvenirs, perfumes, food, T-shirts, and other gift items. The vegetable and fruit vendors are still there alongside the basket weavers who speak Gullah and entice you to buy their goods.

The Market is fun fun fun, and just the historical sites are a blast. You can take a boat tour for 3 hours to Fort Moultrie Can you tell I live here? LOL. You can find more info here: http://www.charlestoncvb.com/visitors/

Beaufort has that 'small town' charm (when you go downtown) with a drive along it's river front area. Lots of shops and places to eat. Beautiful scenery. It really is a small waterfront town, and quaint.

Savannah has "The River Walk", on the river, and loaded with people, it sits below the city streets of Savannah on the water front. Take a boat tour of the area, eat dinner aboard or just ride for an hour or two. Either way, River Walk is truly a GREAT thing. Many shops, chocolate shops, candy shops, tourist shops, and ohmy the places to eat. Savannah is the only town in which you can buy an alocholic drink and take it with you, walking the streets. (they are always served in plastic cups) If you go to Savannah, you can also ride the town for free and see all the sites. They have many trams that take you here or there. So stop by "City Market" and pick up a schedule, be at the stop on time and get off where you like. They are air conditioned too! Savannah is the must see place!

Were I in your shoes, (and knowing what I know) Savannah is the place to go see and do! You wont be dissapointed.
