This is hopefully not a too sad question. My mama passed away suddenly in '97 on Memorial Day and though it has been a decade and some, I've been missing her terribly. I don't live close to home and so cannot do anything directly. I was wondering if any of my sisters here have ideas for long distance memorials of a positive nature that I could do for a Mothers Day remembrance. I have some ideas, but I love to hear some other farmgirl thoughts , mine go in circles too much and I need some new ones

Planting a tree or plant, even if it is in a local garden if you don't have a yard. What were some of your Mom's favorite thing or hobbies? (((HUGS)))

Cheers,
Heather

Annika, my gran died a few summers ago, and my Great Aunt on Christmas Eve...so I've planted something in their honor--Gran loved crabapple trees, so I planted one for her. Aunt Madge lived on Burr Oak Street with her husband and their little cottage and I planted a Burr Oak tree for her. It's just a thought--and honestly, every time I look at those trees I think of Grandma Helen and Aunt Madge.

Heather, my mama loved to sing and loved musicals, she loved animals of all kinds and loved plants and trees. She loved to help others in need. The more ideas the merrier. I've been not looking forward to May and I want to enjoy it and have a nice remembrance of her. I think that quite a few people are likely missing their mamas so, this is a positive thread to help with ideas.

What about a lovely stone bird bath, or permanent bird feeder like a wren house (one of those large metal feeders that looks like a bird mansion?)...My gran loved animals too, so on her little stone we had a little bunny etched. It's just who she was :) When my aunt's longtime boyfriend passed away last year, we bought a stone carved cat to place in her garden--he was a cat lover and now he watches over her that way

Annika,
When my grandma passed a way 2 years ago -I planted climbing yellow roses. She grew up in Texas. and loved the "yellow rose of texas" song.. it has a special meaning to me....I have now added a bench... as I find it is a place I go to read, pray or just feel close to her...If there is one memory that is speical to you.. find something in that that is 'tangible'.... Sorry for your loss....My mom died when I was 9 and I am not sure your heart ever really heals completely... but it does keep beating!

Annika, after reading your post to heather... I thought what about making a wind chime (music).. what a precious reminder everytime you hear it sing!

Annika, these are all good ideas. Since your dear mom loved musicals you might have seen some of them. Any special memories of any ? If so, you could spend a moment watching it again as if she was besides you and drink her favorite beverage in a sort of private commemoration.
I have pictures of my family on a dresser in my bedroom and when I want to think especially of someone, I light a candle in front of their picture for a full day. I make sure the candle is safe in a shallow bowl and I let it burn untill it is finished. At Lourdes, they say that a candle lighted is a prayer in action.
Hugs,
Corinne

I like the idea of planting something as a remembrance- even just a house plant so you can take it with you if you ever move. Another idea would be maybe an apron or quilt in colors she would have liked to wear or cuddle with when you are thinking of her?

Why not search out a lonely women that is about your mom's age who has no family left and plant a rose bush in her yard for her. It will lift both of your spirits ; )

You can tell your dog all of your secrets and they'll never say a word!

In my garden, I have a section of it that I plant or place items in memory of loved ones that have passed away. This year I'm planting a yellow rose for my great grandma that passed away three years ago. It is one of my favorite places to care for the flowers in my garden.

Tina - I really like your idea too. I think I will do that this year with one of our friends that recently lost her mom.
