A couple years ago on a homesteading forum someone mentioned Dolly Freed and her book Possum Living. If you've not read this book, it is a HOOT and very informative! Dolly was 19 when she wrote it back in the '70's. It is out of print, but can be read online. It has to be requested, they will send you a link to access it.

Go here http://www.soilandhealth.org/03sov/0302hsted/0302homested.html
click on Dolly Freed and it will take ya where ya need to go.

Another book I like is "Letters of a Woman Homesteader" by Elinore Pruitt Stewart. Have probably read it 5 times in the last few years, lol. Any farm woman on here will love it too! The most amazing part to me is the harvest she mentions at the end of the book. Absolutely incredible! Most libraries have a copy, or you can find a good deal online at those half price web sites. Or maybe even a country yard sale, they're the best!

I love books! I hope you enjoy these and I'll post more as I think of them. So many books, so little time! :-) And so many good ones have been mentioned on here, thank you all!

Howdy Ya'll ~ I'm so glad you like Possum Living :-). Great wit and wisdom at such a young age, too bad there's not more out there by her!

Hi Janet,

The movie "Heartland" was based on the writings of Elinore Pruitt Stewart . Conchita Farrell played her in the film. It is a very quiet film and the dress and the tack used for the horses was very authentic, if you have a chance to rent the video (library maybe?) check it out.

I am going to check out Possum Living :-)

I had been on the library's waitiing list for the movie Heartland for several months. It finally arrived to me yesterday. I enjoyed watching it, although this was a very worn VHS copy. I found the movie to be very authentic, nothing was sugar coated. There were a couple blank spots in the tape, so I don't know if those portions were so worn they were missing, but I found it kind of hard to follow, especially what Stewart said- with his accent. But, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, the scenery of Wyoming, and the fortitude of Elinore. Women in that time did not have very many options and did what they had to do to try to reach their dreams. In some ways, for women of our time, it is still much the same. Very good movie to contemplate.
