Help~ I have acouple more days till DH comes home from helping his sister in the Hosp. Last night I somehow pulled a muscle in my back while feeding/watering Hoss. I took an Advil and went to bed but this morning it's stiff and I can't bend over, I have to move...got 2 little kids to chase around!!
Any ideas, What do you use?

Warm bath for sure, and get a box of the back heat pads..not made by icyhot, but the other company that I totally can't think of! Oh! Thermacare...Jus swears by them. Give it some rest....you're going to need it :)

Actually, the first 48 hours you are supposed to apply ice not heat, as it reduces swelling and loosens the muscles. My hubby is a paramedic and so I am going by what he has told me. The other thing is to keep moving. Though you don't want to do anything strenuous, you want to keep the muscle from stiffening up more. After the initial 48 hours, then by all means use heat. No magic answer unfortunately. Ibuprofen does help, as it reduces swelling.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Just relating what helped me when I was dancing (and often broken). Ice and cold always made my body feel worse...but to each his own.

I use homeopathic stuff, arnica montana is a great remedy for muscle aches and bruises. You get a little vial of these tiny little pills, and the sooner after you injure yourself you take them, it's remarkable the relief you can get. I always have some in my purse. When my kids were little and would get walloped in some fashion I'd give them arnica and it helps a lot. Hope you feel better soon...Karin

Jonni, I agree the hot bath feels more relaxing . . . believe me my husband had to "sell me" on the cold method, but it truly does stop the swelling, though it isn't a relaxing way of getting there. The heat can actually allow the swelling to continue to get worse, so while it may seem relaxing, it is counter productive. If you were to go to an E.R. they would tell you to ice it also and the heat is for a couple days down the road.
Hugs & blessings,
Brenda

The worst thing you can do is lay in bed for a long time. Your muscles get weak and it can make it worse. Placing heat on it has helped me and I have one of those bags that you place in the microwave that has smell good stuff inside it. One of our family friends made it so I can't remember what is inside it. I use the thermacare patches as well and they are great. No stinky sticky mess to get on your clothes! I've also taken aleve for it. I've had my fair share of back ache from a car wreck and years of carrying a heavy backpack while in college. They are no fun at all.
I hope you get to feeling better!

Heather- I suffered from a severe back injury for years. Here are some of the things I do:
1) walk- slowly, if you can and stretch, again, slowly if you can. Keep loose. 2) Hot bath, cold showers 3) Lots of tylenol- naprosyn if it is really painful 4) If you can- massage and swimming 5) Don't stay in bed all day- worse thing you can do. 6) Learn some back/stomach building exercises to build up your core 7) I like my rice pack that I can heat in the microwave 8) IFyou are like me (big chested), get a GOOD supportive bra- this really has made a difference. Posture Posture Posture!!
Hope you get to feeling better.
Cheers, Heather
