Hello,
I bought a package of these Wall-o-water things to try in my garden this year, to have my tomatoes started outside a little earlier. (Around here you can still get a frost up to the May long weekend)
I've been reading the package, and it says to warm up the ground a week before you want to set the plants out, which I understand. The part I'm wondering about is, once you've got this thing out there with water in the channels, how do you actually plant your tomato plant? Is this a two-person job, one to hold it open, and one to plant it? Also, I have some tomatoes started in the house. Can I put them directly inside the Wall-o-water, without hardening them off first? I don't have great luck with hardening off started plants!
Any advice would be helpful...

Yep..they are wonderful...I plan to put out my first tomatoes in some of them early in may...a month early for regular planting here. I only have 9 of them...wish I had 50!!!
It IS sort of a two person job to get those plants in them. It helps to have a second person when you are filling them with water too! I put a tomato cage inside the wall o water and that holds it open pretty well so I can reach inside. If you warm the ground like you should first you dont' have to harden off the plants first..at least not in my experience..nice and warm in there. I do keep some sheets for covering the top in case of frost when I have the tomato cage on them...but I am careful with my beloved tomatoes..haha
I have used them for peppers too...but mostly for tomatoes. Alot of people here use them since the weather is so unpredictable here even into June most years.

Thanks for the info. This forum is so great for help!
I didn't realize you could put the tomato cage inside it. The package says to start it out like a teepee, until the plant reaches the top, then to open it up. Is this when you would put the cage inside?

I had have never heard of these things...They sound wonderful. I will have to look into this more, but anything to start the garden earlier- Anything!

Okay...when I fill the wall of waters I put a 5 gallon bucket down (handle up) and then put the wall o water over that...fill it, and then pull out the bucket and insert the tomato cage...carefully. It dosn't close over the top, but dosn't fall over as easily either..and it is easy enough to throw an old towel or sheet over each one at night or if frost threatens (most nights here)
