"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..."
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with a passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.
I love this poem and plan on memorizing it to say to Nora each night.

Alee
the tears are running down my cheeks as I read this. I know this love so well. i remember when my son Will was born over 21 years ago. I loved him instantly with such power and i still feel the same today. It never ends. He is 6'4" and the most beautiful human being I've still ever seen or known.

Isn't it amazing? I think people when they write such as this poem, must be touching on some sort of Muse or maybe the power that turns the universe or something because these are the types of poems that burrow into your mind and take hold.

Oh Alee, how sweet to memorize this to recite to Nora!
My last belly baby is 18 now and I sang "Jesus Loves Me" every night to her until she was close to 10 years old. She would fall asleep so peaceful.
One night, I was unable to get home from work in time to sing to her. She was giving her sister a fit. So I received a call from the older daughter and I sang the song so she would go to sleep. attempting to be quiet as I stood at the hub of the hospital OB unit..

I love this poem, too. I discovered Elizabeth Barrett Browning as a teenager (I'm in my 50's now). In fact, I dramatized this poem as part as my talent as a Junior Miss contestant in 1969. She was gifted writer. And I love the way you can change the rhythm of the poem by changing the emphasis you put on certain words as you recite it. Thanks for bringing to mind a fun memory.
