I am interested in raising bees. I looked on the site to see if there are any previous postings, but couldn't find any. If anyone knows where I could find a past posting on it, will you let me know. If is it a new topic and you know about obtaining bees and keeping them, fill me in! My husband thinks I'm nuts, but I've wanted to have bees forever.

Thanks!

Welcome Mindy! There are some ladies here that can give you information on bees and there might be some information found at your county extension office as well. Nice meeting you!

Hi there!
I'm just getting into beekeeping as well-we are in the process of setting up two hives. I don't have a lot of experience to share with you, but I can share some great resources we have found that have been helpful to us.
1) The beesource beekeeping website. A lot of info. you can search for, plus you can ask questions, etc. The website is: http://www.beesource.com/forums/.

2) Cornell University offers a master beekeeper program. HOWEVER, even if you can't go to it (I couldn't), the website has GREAT information.
http://www.masterbeekeeper.org/

3) We took a beginning beekeeping class at a local supplier of hives.
You may want to look for one in your area.

4) The BEST thing we did-do a search on-line for local beekeeping associations. We joined our local one, and they helped hook us up with a local mentor. This has been very helpful.

5) We also read up on the subject- The "Idiots Guide to Beekeeping" was good, as was "The New Starting Right with Bees".

I think all of these helped us get prepared for our bees-we are painting our two hives now, and our bees arrive in May.

Good luck-feel free to contact me at my e-mail if you want more info. on any of these items, and I can let you know how it goes with ours!

my friend and I are getting a hive! She is keeping it at her house as I am highly allergic but we are sharing all the costs and hopefully lots of honey! There is a girl on here named Bev(beehavenmaven) that raises bees. I emailed her yesterday but haven't heard back yet. If she gives me any info I will post it here!

Hey Mindy...I have a friend here in town who raises bees..she is very sweet and I know she would love to talk bees with you. My youngest daughter did her "junior genius" project in 3rd grade on honey bees and she was so much help! I will have to give you her name and phone # when we talk....you will like her.
