TODAY'S THE DAY!!! i'm going to start giving 'instructions' on how to make these little Pyn Wheels .. let's keep this thread just for instructions .. photos 'in progress' .. any pyn wheels YOU make and wish to 'show and tell' .. and any questions/answers.

i made these using 'vintage' fabric .. cut from an antique quilt. (as will be the 'kits' that i can send for $2. to cover the postage. (e-mail me for my addy if you need it). (i'll post photos of the kits soon).

anyhoo .. if you wish to get a 'jump start' .. or if you have your own fav fabrics .. START by doing this:

find some 'cardboard' .. about the thickness of the priority mailing boxes that you can get from the post office .. (i've used cereal boxes .. but DOUBLED them and glued them together to make them a little firmer .. too flimsy .. and they get 'bent' .. too thick and you can't 'cut' them!

my circles are 2 and 3/4 inches in diameter .. you can make them a little larger .. only NOT smaller!

CUT TWO cardboard circles.

now .. CUT TWO fabric circles .. about 3/4 inches BIGGER than your cardboard circles.

get this part done .. let me know (HERE) .. and i'll talk YO's to you!

remember .. use this TOPIC heading just for the above stuff .. if you wanna' jus' comment .. please use the 'other Colonial Pyn Wheel' heading. thanks! xo, frannie

thread a needle with STRONG thread .. and a good size KNOT at the end of your thread.

now .. do a 'running stitch' ALL the way around each of the fabric circles (separately, of course!)

(i'll go to my little sewing room and do one of these .. photograph it and post it .. but .. meanwhile .. if you can figger it out without the pictures ... you will TUG FIRMLY .. so that your yo-yo encased card circle doesn't get any 'pooches' .. you want it to cover firmly and somewhat tightly.

you will 'criss-cross' from side to side .. working your way around the circle (therefore, SEWING the fabric around the cardboard circle.

i'll post pics soon .. and give more directions.

(IF you have gotten this far .. and all looks well (neat, clean, crisp fabric-covered circle!) .. you can KNOT IT OFF .. INSIDE .. so that the outside fabric looks taut!

oh .. by the way .. here are the 'antique quilt' kits i've worked up .. if you'd like one of these .. just send me a self-addressed envelope with two dollars in it.

these are some of the kits.

each kit will include 2 cardboard circles .. 2 vintage patchwork quilt fabric circles .. and an extra 2 'newer' fabric circles .. you might want to practice with the 'new cloth' first.

you do have to take care with the 'edges of the patchwork that it does not come 'un-did' because it has been cut over the seam lines.

i usually do a tight running stitch (by hand or machine) around the circles to help secure the patches.

BE SURE to make a 'pattern' from both the cardboard and the fabric circles .. so you can make MORE of these little cuties!

cardboard circles.

personally, if i use these .. i WRITE on the WHITE side .. and make sure those are INSIDE .. the BROWN side is next to the fabric.

if you don't understand something in these instructions .. jus' post here .. and i'll try and clear it up.

that 'criss-cross' thing will make more sense when you see a picture.

comin' soon! xo

thread pulled tight and 'knotted off'

IMPORTANT .. make sure it is SNUG before knotting off. it helps to hold your finger or thumb over the thread after pulling tight .. THEN KNOW TIGHT!

very hard to see the 'black thread' that i sewed this on with . but it criss-crosses from side to side .. up and down .. no particular order .. just 'anchor it' so the fabric doesn't come loose.

almost finished! place the two 'wrong' sides together and move the circle 'in circles' until you come up with the 'best fit' .. sometimes the circle might be a tad different in small places.

now .. with coordinating (with your fabric) thread .. KNOT .. and hide you knot inside the circle by starting your first stitch slightly inside the outer edge

..

take tiny stitches all around the 'edge .. making sure to pick up equal amounts of fabric .. and spaced as evenly as possible .. and quite close to each other.

finish by knotting off when you meet up where you began stitching .. then 'bury' your knot just inside the outer edge of the circle.

VOILA! ALL FINISHED!

any questions, jus' ask ... any suggestions, please share.

oh .. fill the edges of your 'pyn wheel' with PINS!

a wonderful way to carry lots of pins and they won't JAB you through a pin 'cushion'.

post pictures of your finished wheels.

hope you like this little project and make lots of them. they are a very sweet little gift to give.

Frannie, thanks everso much for teaching us this one. I just finished my first pyn wheel and here are pictures of both sides, since I used the same fabric pattern, in two colors. I'm going to make this for mothers day gifts and christmas stocking stuffers.. love them.
