Hello,
Ya know how when you have a big idea it scares you a little because, what if it actually works? Yeah, I'm a little nervous typing this right now.
No matter how nervous I am, I can't stop thinking about all of the family homesteads lost in Louisiana, Mississippi and elsewhere because of the hurricane. I'm shipping boxes of stuff, selling my forgotten relics for money to send, and encouraging everyone else I run into to help with the hurricane relief. And so is everyone around me. It has been an incredible showing of emotion and compassion and it is overwhelming.
I wanted my little chapter, Farmgirl Spirit (http://www.farmgirlspirit.com), to do something. I posted ideas about bake sales and craft sales, but nothing really excited me... except for this.
I want all of the chapters of the Farmgirl Connection to adopt/help save a farm.
To tell you the truth, I'm not even sure what all I exactly mean about this. Could be all chapters work as one and adopt one farm (to start anyway) or that each chapter adopts their own farm. I know that there are whole families and whole farms that have lost so much, and we are a community that has so much that we can give. I sit on my Brooklyn fire escape among my struggling tomato plants, wishing for a farm of my own, and can't help but be struck by my good fortune and the thought of a family trying to live my dream and yet struggling to survive.
Maybe we find a farm and send them things like letters of love and seeds and quilts. Maybe we organize a way to help them rebuild a barn. I don't know. I just know that I can't keep pretending I didn't have this idea because it would take so much to do.
So, what do we do?

Doesn't sound like a bad idea. How do we go about this though, I wonder. We have to find out about the farms first, I guess. Where are they, who are they? Then I should be able to reach these farms somehow. The gathering of stuff is the easy part I think. It's the finding the farms and contacting them is the part that I'm not sure how to do. But we should be able to pull togther something here in a creative farmgirl style. What so ya think ladies?!

Hey Farm Girls!!!
I would suggest that you go to www.farmaid.org. Farm Aid is having a huge benefit concert tomorrow in Illinois to help those who have lost so much.

Or American Farmland Trust. I just read something in a small Kansas paper on group forming to do this.

I just wanted to revive this idea. It's such a great one-- a lot of family farms across the country are in trouble and can use all of the help they can get, weather disasters or no. I was thinking a big way to help small farms would be to have a chapter buy a CSA share, which could be split up amongst the members, or each member could buy their own share. Imagine being able to buy 5-6 shares and guarantee that much of an income for your local farmer! And don't forget about volunteering time at your local farm-- that would make a great chapter event.

Amanda, I am all for helping all I can anyone I can but you lost me...what is the CSA and how much would a share cost? I am going to google it now and see what I can find out but wanted to ask in case I wander down the wrong path!  Thank you so much!!

CSA stands for "community supported agriculture." Many small vegetable farms offer these. This is how it works-- at the beginning of the spring, you pay an up front sum (or sometimes in a few installments) to a farmer, purchasing a share of the harvest for every week during the season. Once you have paid you go to the farm (or designated pickup, or some farms offer delivery) and recieve a share of produce. Some shares include meats, dairy, eggs or value-added products. If a share seems like more produce than you can use in a week, many farms also offer half shares. As far as cost, most shares run $300-$400. This seems like a lot of money, but keep in mind it's fresh fruits and veggies for almost half the year. You can find a CSA that's local to you by going to www.localharvest.com

Have you ladies seen all the flooding this spring? I am sure there are a lot of farms needing help again this year.
Would anyone be interested in doing something as a Farmgirl Chapter Project to help the farmers?
Does anyone have any ideas of what we could do? I would love ideas that wouldn’t necessarily require a huge monetary involvement on our part.
Maybe each chapter could do a clothing drive in their area and then ship the gathered clothes to needy farmers.
I would be willing to do research to find needy farms or agencies that could help us donate. Let me know what you think!

Thank you so much for explaining it to me! I found everything online and found a few in the area in VT we may move to this summer. If we do move DH and I will buy a few shares since I will not be able to get a good garden and all in this year, we will buy some shares for sure...and who knows I may for awhile untill I get our gardens/orchards growing and producing well.
If we dont' move back home soon I would still be happy to help and chip in on sponsorships..do let me know!
