I use and read that French Marigolds are a pest deterent. I did it last year and didn't have any pests, so I'm inclined to believe it ;)

They are great next to tomatoes- I always plant the two together and we have not had ANY pest problems with them. Look up companion planting to see what other combos are recommended.
Warmly, Rebekka

Thanks Ladies, I just started to dig up my raised beds today. We have had some rain showers here (Rome GA), and I work through the week in Buford Ga. So it is hard for me to do things on time. When I started to dig through the weeds and grass, I found in both raised beds ants...So I got as many as I could and put mushroom compost in and turned the soil. Now I am waiting until Monday to plant...I will put the marigolds in with the veggies....I cant wait until my husband and I reap the rewards of the garden.
Thanks again

Oh yes, we used to plant marigolds with nearly everything! They work better with some plants than others, like tomatoes, at keeping the pests away, but they're still nice to have all throughout a garden! :)

Hi Deborah,
Although I'm still a month and a half away from planting any veggies outside, I'm planning to put some marigolds in my vegetable garden to keep the bunnies away.

Does anyone know if the marigolds will keep the rabbits away? They're my biggest pest!

Ladies, I finished planting today. I am going to have soooo many tomatoes I might have to give them away...I planted my jalapaneo pepper plant in a container. I didnt have any room in the raised beds to put it. And I put the 2 strawberry plants in containers also....I am going to give my daughter 3 tomatoe plants and 4 broccoli plants...I didnt have room for them either. I put marigolds all through the plants...and I bordered them on the sides of the beds. I thank all you ladies for the information. This is such a wonderful site. I am so glad I picked up MJF mag at the book store...It has really helped me
Thanks Again

Jonni, I am afraid to do the canning with a pressure cooker. I do the hot bath kind...But I can do the sauces and paste.

Why are you afraid, Deborah? They're sooo much safer than they used to be, I do know that...I also prefer to waterbath can, but it's limited now, based on every extension service canning guide I've been reading. One of my elderly friends says it's "pishaw" about canning tomatoes in the pressure canner, but I'm not so sure....
