Okay ladies, I need some good costume ideas! My sons are 4 & 6, and are really looking forward to Halloween. We don't get television, though, so the usual costumes (like the ones at the stores) don't necessarily occur to my kids. Last year, the oldest was a bat, and the younger was a dinosaur. I'm sort of hoping to convince the little guy to be a bat this year, so he can use his brother's costume from last year, but I still need to outfit the older one. Any ideas, especially for costumes that I could make myself (with really minimal sewing skills)? |

I always love to make my kids Halloween costumes...(I love halloween for the costumes and parties..and the kids have so much fun with it) My kids have to make a final decision on what they want to "be" by Oct. first..so I dont' get last minute changes...and then the fun begins. Last year we had a hula girl (a conservative one with a white body shirt top) and a pioneer girl, and dracula and a dinosaur. We have had some real fun figuring out how to make a wanted costume. One year a long time ago oldest son wanted to be an astronaut..that was fun and turned out cute...9 year old son has used the same black cape the past 4 years! He used it to be BAtman, Zorro, a magician (I lined it with red sparkly felt that year) and then last year for dracula. He wants to be Darth VAdar this year since he had a mask from his birthday cake (I used it to decorate the top) but he says he wants a new longer black cape this time. youngest of my daughters wants to be a cheerleader this year and older one says Carmen Miranda..yikes! That will be fun but challenging. Youngest son hasn't decided yet. The girls are trying to talk him into being a bumble bee since they saw an old picture of one of the oldest sons in a costume like that from years ago. We did a Karate kid costume one year that was really fun, and a convict (black and white striped outfit and a ball and chain (black plastic chain and black painted styro ball. ) A good one to fall back on is a hobo..that is always easy and fun and no sewing..coffee grounds stuck onto a face brushed with karo syrup makes great "beard stubble". and they carry a stick with bandana"pack" on it...and wear dads clothes stuffed with pillows and rope suspenders..and big boots. Pioneers, pirates and superheros are always big hits with my boys too. And sports heros. Good luck..fun to think of things isn't it.

I don't have any kids but I seen a cute costume in a magazine. They took a old clothes basket and cut the bottom off, they then made sholder straps on the basket with sstrings or belts. They had the kid wear a sweatsuit and then safety pinned a whole bunch of clothes all over the kids shirt. They also wore a hat that had "laundry" pinned on it. You could also use the same idea and use leaves. (Maybe cut out of felt) Another one I seen was a box of cereal, they just cut holes and let the kid wear a box then decorated it to look just like their favorite cereal. Their big brother was a "quart" of milk. Using the same idea. He just had a hat made like the top of the milk box. |

Those are cute ideas!!! For the last 2 years my youngest went as a pumpkin and the costume was soooo easy to make. I got it on sale at my local fabric store. A friend of mine made a robot costume last year. She had her daughter dress up in dark grey sweats then over her arms and legs she put dryer venting. Over her head she put a cardboard box that was covered in tin foil and cut eye holes and a mouth. It was pretty cute and inexpensive. |

My girls are going to be thing 1 and thing 2 from the Dr. Suess book Cat in the Hat.
We are just going to use red hooded sweatshirts, with iron on transfers for the thing logos and then use some fabric glue on the hoods to stick on the blue fur from an old teddy bear we are going to gut, buy some white mittens or gloves and voila! Warm, comfy and cute.
you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive. |

If you need Halloween decorating ideas - I used to volunteer for the Haunted Woods in Tampa, and last year we threw a grownups-only Halloween party at our house. People couldn't believe what I did to transform the house, I think I spent less than $100 to do it (food and spooky ingredients for alcoholic drinks included).
Or tricks on how to scare your trick-or-treaters silly in your yard... oh BOY do I know how to do that! *WARNING: you may have more leftover candy if you scare them too bad!
A lot of it is just subtle tricks and a few psycological adjustments to your home & yard. SOOO much fun!

When my twins were about 6, I got two square boxes from U-Haul and on each box, cut the bottom flaps off, and a hole in the top for their head to go through, and a hole on two opposite sides (for their arms). I covered the top and sides with white felt, and cut round circles out of black felt. I glued the black circles on the sides and top to match dice. The boys wore black sweatpants and sweatshirts under the box. They are 21 now, and still remember all the comments when they went out as a pair of dice. |

My kids did not have TV when they were small either so I relied on Disney. One year they were dwarfs, leotards, felt with velcro over shoes, shorts and little plaid flannel shirts and the hat made from felt also. OH, don't forget suspenders. One year one was Elvis. That is easy too, there are patterns out there but You take a jump suit. Sometimes you can buy them cheap in the work wear area of walmart or your farm store. Then I took old jewelry and sewed the glitter beads rick-rack etc. on the jumpsuit with a big belt buckle. Then alot of jell to slick the hair. |

Dress them up as members of ... oh, for instance... staff of a local tax-funded institution and have them tell people they're monsters.
Just a thought!

I always made my kid's costumes- from acorns to ducks and aquariums! A cardboard box was the base for the aquarium covered in blue felt and trimmed with aluminum foil covered rope hot glued along the edges. After that, we had a ball making little felt fish and gluing them on, using heavy sandpaper for the gravel and green plastic wrap for plants. I did sew a shark head and with darker blue felt, made it look like it was "breaking out" of the tank. After cutting a hole in the box behind the open mouth, my son could put his hand through the shark's mouth to collect the candy. That was a great Halloween.

ok, this is not politically correct, but the photo WAS cute. A guy I used to work with put his daughter (2 yrs old) in a sweatsuit and cut out arm holes etc in an empty beer case.
