Another post had me thinking. I was pretty lucky to grow up in a school system that taught us how to make change even as we were learning what money was and such (2nd grade). Other's weren't as lucky and it can be a scary thing.
The thing about making change is that you are trying to make what the customer paid, the total and the change all mesh. So lets say you buy something for $4.95. You hand the clerk a $10 bill. This is how you make change:
Total is: $4.95 Change is: $.05 makes $5, (add dollar bills) $6, $7, $8, $9, and $10. That way you have the Total and you count up to the amount that you as the customer gave. That way you know that you go the proper and complete change back.
Another example-
Say you buy something that is $4.39 and pay with the same $10 bill. I would count it back to you as: "Your total is $4.39. You paid with $10 so that makes: $.01 makes $4.40, $.60 make $5, and (adds dollar bills) $6, 7, 8, 9, and $10 back.
I hope that make sense. If you are new to making change, I suggest you get get some change out and try to make change for the following purchases:
$1.77 $20.53 $4.82 $5.06 $7.75

I was always taught round up and then subtract, then count it back, I know that makes no sense, but it does to me!! If you really want a loop, try figuring out percentages off an item like 20% off $43 or 35% off $58. I still struggle with that one but I can do it s-l-o-w-l-y in my head. LOL!!!
Cheers, Heather

Thanks Alee, That is exactly how I learned to count change back.
It also would protect against any shady persons trying to cheat you. "Oh, I gave you a twenty..." when they really gave you a ten, type of situation. (It happens)
It is also good to do the change back "game" to keep your mind sharp. LOL

I learned how to make change by helping my mom out tending our garage sales when I was younger. I'm not usually great with percent off sales, and yet I get giddy at the sight of a clearance sign. When something is, say, 40% off I take 10% of the price times four (so if something was $12 and 40% off I would say 10% of $12 is $1.20 so 40% = $4.80 off). 75% is half of half. It all makes sense to me but I know everyone else has their own way of thinking! -Elizabeth |
