My family is coming down that way next week, from MI, and I was wondering if any of you had any ideas of things we shouldn't miss. We don't really have much of a plan at this point, that I know of any way...lol, so if you had some ideas I would appreciate it. There will be 5 of us, my mom and dad, sister and niece and me. My niece is 11 and would love to see some horse farms, my parents are farmers, my sister is into art and I'm up for whatever.

Share with me what you love to do in your state!

Howdy, Elizabeth--I know you'll be coming through Northern Kentucky--can you give me an idea of how "far" off the beaten path you'd go? If you'll drive about a 1/2 hour off 71/75, I highly recommend Rabbit Hash, Kentucky--it's the general store we frequent from 1830, and the little town is charming--you can buy sasparilla and all kinds of old candies, and there is a great little antique/junk store attached and across the street. On your way to Rabbit Hash is the Dinsmore Homestead, a pre-Civil War era family home of the Dinsmore's, who literally abandoned the site in the 1920's with all furnishings left intact. The house was closed up and all items are as they left them. Very beautiful place and such a great history--plenty of outbuildings and cemetery to explore.

Just across the bridge into Kentucky, is Covington and Newport. About 5 minutes off the exit is Newport on the Levee and the Newport Aquarium--wonderful things if you want to take a break and stretch your legs. The aquarium is REALLY great, and there's plenty of food and, if it's a nice day, you can walk the purple people bridge over the Ohio. http://www.newportaquarium.com/

I'll let the Lexington and Lousiville girls cover the horse farms, etc...

What great suggestions Jonni! With my dad driving I'm sure well be well off the beaten path, he likes to take the road less traveled...lol When we drove out west, I was in high school, he got us onto some roads that I could have sworn we were going to get stranded on because of how remote they were. It always turns out to be a good time though and that trip is one I wish I'd enjoyed more when it was going on-you know that teenage girl thing we sometimes get ;)
Thank you so much for your suggestions!

I'm glad, Elizabeth! We always take the road less travelled, too. As my husband says, if we drive the honda through a creekbed, it's extra points!

I'm also including the link to both Rabbit Hash and the Dinsmore. I think you'll really have a good time at both, if you go. You might get lucky enough to catch some music at the general store if you come through on Sunday. Barn dances start up in the late Spring on Friday nights. You just park your car and head into the barn for fun! The drive down KY 18 is a pretty one, and you can't beat seeing the little burgs of Bellview Bottoms and McVille, which was a lock town at one time.

I forget what the Rabbit Hash documentary movie is called?? Maybe Elizabeth could watch that before coming. It is such a crack up(it is about their mayor, who is a dog--not joking either) That will really entice her to go! The mayor/dog in the movie has sinced passed, but their current mayor is also a dog, named Junior

I think, oddly enough, Lisa, it's called "Rabbit Hash, The Movie"...It is really hysterical, isn't it? When last I saw Junior at the silent auction event in the fall, he was experiencing some "urinary tract" issues and had to be escorted (albeit with much pomp and circumstance) away from the auction items and outside :)

Reading these posts and the article about Hell, Rabbit Hash, etc. is giving me itchy feet. I've been longing for one of those trips where i always take the backroads. My kids would always yell at me when they were little that we were going straight to Hell so I'll have to make sure they read the article to know that it can in fact be done. Last time I got too far off road with my daughter was last fall, we ended up in a gravel pit somewhere between Razorville and Stickney Corners, and I didn't find them either, though I finally got us home. We were out enjoying the foliage, so it wasn't aa total loss. Many years ago, before children i made many cross country trips with and without my husband. All the little places were the ones that captured my heart. Sorry to blather on, I just remember driving through Tennessee and Kentucky and all the wonderful green colors and rolling hills and beauty everywhere. Course the gas was about 33 cents a gallon the first few times we did that...Karin

Karin, that sounds like so much fun--I would have loved to have seen more of Maine when I was last there....we took some backroads, but not many, having not travelled the state before...also, I was 22 or so and thought, "hey, we don't need to make reservations anywhere, we'll just find a romantic b&b somewhere in a tiny town and stay there!" Well, torential downpours and cold weather, and no room at the in in Freeport took us back to a Ramada in Portland. No big deal, it was a fun trip anyway!!!!

Elizabeth....Jonni has you covered heading in from Cincinnati/Covington area. I can help you with some Lexington area stuff and perhaps Janice can tell you a little bit more Louisville stuff.

Coming down I-75, you will come to Exit 120 with the Kentucky Horse Park. You can spend about 1/2 day there with their different horses, etc. It will be home of the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Coming out of the Horse Park, turn left onto Iron Works Pike. At the stopsign, you will turn right onto Newtown Pike. You will be able to see some of the stone fences along the way. I could get you lost with downtown directions, so I won't take ya'll down there. But you can go to http://www.visitlex.com/ for hotels and other information.

Back on the road...now you can come down Newtown Pike and turn right onto New Circle Road (also known as Circle 4 to some). You will get off at Old Frankfort Pike and turn right. This will give you a beautiful backroads view of some of the finest horse farm operations. You will see a country store on your right and keep trucking down the road for a tiny bit. When you see a red brick church, turn LEFT onto Pisgah Pike. Down this road is more beautiful horse farms, including Winstar Farm. It has beautiful fountains and stonewalls and barns. This is somewhat of a winding road, but not too bad. You will also see Pisgah Pike Church on your left. At the end of the road on your left you will see our infamous Castle.

Now, you are in Versailles. At the redlight, if you go Left you can go back into Lexington and see the airport and Keeneland Horse Track (you can take tours of it). If you go right, you will go towards Versailles.

To get back to the interstate, you will turn right. Pass Bluegrass Parkway - do not get on unless you want to head over to Western KY. Ok, you will pass a few signs and turn right onto US 60. If you follow that road, it will take you to Frankfort. Or, after you see the high school on the left, not far from it is US 62 towards Midway. (I suggest the Midway route). It will take you about 10 minutes to go to Midway. It is a 55 mph road...some folks still go 35-45mph on there and it gets backed up. You will pass Lane's End Farm (this is the farm that the Queen of England visits), along with Stonewall Farm (with beautiful stonewalls and fountains out front). You will come to a 4-way stopsign. Go straight. (If you turn right, it takes you back to Lexington as it is Old Frankfort Pike). You will come to the town of Midway. I recommend stopping and going shopping. You will see crafts, artwork, and so much more there. The town is built around a traintrack and there is a train that rolls through now.

To get back to the interstate, you will turn right when you leave the Midway shops. You will vere left at the country store and head down to the stop sign. Turn right onto Leestown Road. Turn Left at the caution light and you will be at I-64. If you turn Left, you will go towards Frankfort/Louisville area. If you turn right, you will go towards Lexington.

As far as gas stations in this area, there are some on Newtown Pike and in Versailles. We have BP, Superamerica, Shell, and Chevron in this area.

Oh, also at the horse park, you can book a horse farm tour. They are usually about $25 per person and they take you on a few farms to get upclose to the horses. This will be probably your only way to get onto horse farms.

If you need recommendations on lodging, etc, let me know. Oh I'm too excited to hear about your adventures!

You are welcome Elizabeth. I highly suggest getting the Frommer's Guide to Kentucky book. The photos in it are just gorgeous. They also have updated information on different trip ideas based on region.

Also, Louisville has the Louisville Slugger Museum and the art museum. And if you are traveling past Lexington on I75, I suggest a day in Berea. Lots of crafts, artwork, and great food!
