One thing I learned a few years ago is that today's new construction materials, insulation, and windows can actually make a house so draft free- that new air doesn't come in enough. Our houses are supposed to have enough air moved through, that it only takes 2 days for the whole volume of air to be replaced with fresh. Otherwise out gassing vapors, carbon dioxide, and home based air pollution can build up to toxic levels.
You might not even realize you are being poisoned by your own house. You might just feel a bit tired, a bit run down. Maybe a nap sounds extra good. You might feel slightly depressed and less motivated.
When you walk outside, within 5 minutes do you perk up? Do you feel more energized, less tired, less depressed?
If that sounds like you, a simple remedy is to open two windows at opposite ends of the house. When you can smell fresh air inside your house (or if it's winter- when it gets too cold for you) you have probably released most of the old air from your house.
To prevent dangerous build up, keep one window in each room slightly cracked. Even 1/4 of an inch will help bring in the fresh air that you need to survive. Pets and Plants will thank you as well.

That is such good advice!! In my old house I don't have to worry about it...cracks and drafts are everywhere..haha. I sure can feel that lack of fresh air in newer houses though!!

I put towels at the bottom of my back door to prevent drafts on the cold nights. It makes such a difference in the house! It keeps things snug. But I am all about opening the door or a window and letting the fresh air in on mild days!!!!!

Such wonderful advice, Alee! You know, I do feel so much better when the fresh air is flowing through the house. I think I will make this a ritual in our home from now on. Thanks so much for sharing.

I aired out my house today and it feels so much better in here. I have to be careful how much cold air I let in because Nora likes the temperature warm. I loved listening to the sweet birds chirping outside.

I constantly air out my house, even on some cold days. I think it helps us all sleep better and it clears the air.

That is great advice and something I do daily, even on cold days, if only for an hour. It just makes the house smell better too.

I had no idea...
I live in an old cottage and I have to open the windows or that musty smell will take over :(
Makes for alot of dusting but I love having fresh air circulating!

Wonderful information ladies!
I did know about this, but had forgotten about it! I'm at work while reading this topic over, and I had been feeling very tired and depressed! The office I manage is on my boss's property in her barn! Just the way I like it! I'm sure most of the barn is drafty enough but the renevated office space may not be. I got right up and opened the door to let in that glorious fresh air and bird sounds and I'm feeling better already! Thanks gals!! |

I too, make it part of my weekly cleaning to air out the house sat mornings... I love the fresh smell it brings to the whole house....
