How do you pick your dog's name?
We have had Cricket who was named because she was so shy, black and shiny.
We have had Seanee who was named at a suggestion of my mom's (not sure how she thought of it)
And my current dog is Obsidian Sky, but more often called Sky or Sky Dog. She is mainly black with one blue eye.
Just wondering if anyone had deep meanings behind their pet names or if it is just something that comes to you randomly?

kensi's first name is Kensington. The house we got her from was on Kensington Lane.
Hagrid was our first mastiff. Mastiffs are offer called HalfGiants so we named him after Hagrid in the Harry Potter Books who was a half giant.
We decided to continue the harry potter theme. Lily is named after Harry's mother and thunder is after the thunderbolt that is on harry's forehead.

Currently have two female labs - a yellow one named Lily and a chocolate one named Moose. No particular meaning behind the names, but it's funny how they really fit their names perfectly. Lily is a small girly lab, and Moose is just that - a big chunky slobbery mess of love :)

When DD was about 4 we got a chocolate lab from the rescue. She named her Brownie. That same year we got a black rabbit and she named him Mr. Black and then we found a litter of kittens in the wood pile. The one that stayed was grey and white so DD named her Grey Kitty. Notice a pattern yet?
If you want cool names for your pets never let a 4 year old name them. :)
Our latest addition, was two years ago, a springer spaniel from the pound. His name - Dakota. Much better. :) |

My dog is named Milton. Shetland sheepdog but very laid back and never barks. I guess he just looked like a Milton to us. He was kind of squirly when he was a puppy but now he's mellowed out alot. His name fits him.

Our little mini weiner dog (12 years old now) is Frank (yep..like Frankfurter!) Maggie the Basset came with her name, but it fits her, she is 3 and 1/2 years old. Stella looked just like my Great Aunt Stella when I got her as a 6 week old pup. She is nearly 11 years old now. I almost always name my pets with people names. One exception is our tomcat Pumpkin. He is 12 now and we have had him since he was born.

My dogs Emmaline Harris and Anne Shirley are from the Anne of Green Gables books, my Lucky was named lucky cause he is lucky to be alive, he first owners divorced and the man threw him and his sibling out in the back yard and left them. They were trying to survive on eating their own mess, when someone saved them. And Brea was already named when we got her Saturday. The next female I get provided she does not have a name will be named Diana Berry.

My first dog Abby was named after a character in a movie called Map of the Human Heart. The heroine was Abertine
Jasmine came as a last minute inspiration one morning while I was making my husband's lunch and trying to think of a good name for our new puppy soon to arrive. Hubby drinks jasmine tea every morning, and we both love jasmine rice....so of course Jasmine!!! Her other name would have been Maggie, but to me that's too common.

These names are so great!!! My first childhood dog was named Rascal...well, because she was. My husky, Lily (of the Valley) was named so because she was born on Easter.
Our 115 lb. German Shepherd, Rose, my husband named after the AC/DC song "Whole Lotta Rosie"--not because he likes AC/DC, but because she's sooooo BIG!
Finnigan showed up on a cold, bright St. Patricks Day, (Finnigan Begin-Again),
Elie, named after Elie Wiesel, the concentration camp survivor who wrote the book, "Night" about his experiences--our "Elie" was thrown over the 8 ft. fence at the shelter and broke his leg, and he was a "black dog" and undersocialized, so the director slated him for euthanasia. Justin was ADAMANT that we were bringing him home and that his name was Elie.
Daisy (Bad Seed) reminded me of the little skunk from Bambi. Bad Seed was added after she arrived at our house and her little ornery personality started showing through :)..Now she is going by Daisy Katherine Gallagher (like the character,Mary Katherine Gallagher from Saturday Night Live)

My girls get to name all of our deer dogs as well as my dad's foxhounds.
So far we have WonderWoman, Superman, Glenda (the good witch), Cotton, Christmas, YellowJacket and many, many others! It's fun to see what they come up with.

Well our dog Lizzie already had that name when she adopted us when we bought 'her' house and moved in. Our chow mix twins...Hilda and Tilda(Tulda) were named by my mother-in-law after we picked them up from the shelter.

Jennifer, my father used to raise foxhounds too! I used to show them at benchshows when I was a kid during the field trials we had around here. Foxhounds are loyal, friendly, and charming hounds, I love them! Our's had names like Jed, Ellie Mae, Betty Rose, Sweetlips, Martha White, Nancy, and Hide-a-Way GoBoy.

Mine is a Scottie dog, and he is all black. We named him Angus McEwen-as in Black Angus beef. The McEwen part is my Mother's family name.
Originally, I was going to name him Fergus. But, truthfully, Angus suits him better.
Perhaps the next one will be a Fergus.
He is a GREAT dog, I just adore him to pieces. He originally started out as my son's dog, but has since turned traitor and loves me the best. LOL

Jennifer, what a cutie she is! Thanks for sharing that pic! Seeing those numbers painted on the dogs brings back so many wonderful memories. And congrats to your father too! Was the trophy for a bench show or the field trial itself? It's been years since I've been to an event, my father ran a dog in trial one year and did very well. Most years he was a field judge though.

Our yellow lab boys are Luke and Clay, don't know why they just looked like a Luke and Clay. Our ex son-in-law has a red lab named Arson, I think that's pretty cute. We have also had a Ginger (Doberman), for Ginger Rogers, Edie (mutt the kids rescued) Bud (Doberman) and Bo (chocolate Lab.
