Barnyard Buddies:  My rooster "lost" his legs - ideas??  |

My small, red mixed-breed rooster Joe was limping on one leg yesterday, and today he can't stand at all. He can only scoot along on his wings. My bigger rooster has been picking on him a lot lately, but there is no obvious injury/swelling/abnormality anywhere. When I turn Joe belly-up, he can move both legs, but they obviously can't bear weight and he can't stay perched on a roost. He's only 11 months old.
Do you know of any chicken diseases that strike so quickly & cause lameness? Joe's been perfect up till yesterday -- he eats organic layer ration, free ranges daily, and eats kitchen scraps, so I don't think he's suddenly deficient. But I don't know what it could be.
I've isolated him, and he's alert - even crowing throughout the day.
What do you seasoned chicken ladies think?

awww... I love chickens. I had them when I lived at my mom and dads place and I often went out to the chicken yard and sat with them and watched them...: )They were so cute and I always ended up laughing at something they did. Poor baby rooster. I had a rooster that was more of a pet than an actual rooster..He sat in my lap and ate from my hand and I even taught him some tricks ( well, I bribed him with food) ... I hope your baby gets better.

The only thing I can thing of is that his legs could have gotten broken? A year or so ago another lady had a duck with the same issue and her legs had broken right at the hip joint so swelling was not immediately noticeable if at all. Maybe try and make him comfy and see if he recovers after a day or two?

I have seen what you describe in younger chickens..their bodies growing so fast that their legs are too weak to support them. They usually will set with their feet sort of up in the air...looks realy wierd..and drag themselves. It dosn't get better..but his may be something else since he would obviously already be full size at 11 months old. I wish LadyCrystal would check in..she is a real chicken expert!!

Thanks so much, girls! I am thrilled to report that today Joe is back on his feet - no worse for wear! I talked to my mom last night because she has rescued a zillion chickens in the past few years, and we discussed the possibility of Marek's disease...so I fretted all night. But it looks like he just got into a bad scrape with our big rooster (Monsieur Pompidou) that left his brain a bit scrambled. Anyway, I'm so happy because I love this rooster. I rigged up a makeshift second coop & yard for Joe and 3 of my little araucana hens this morning. Yea!

Me too! We had a story very similar a few months ago... the roo not able to stand was attacked by another rooster and became much worse. After isolating the hurt guy and giving away the other roos, our boy made out great! Doesn't your heart about stop while you wonder if he'll live?

I know just what you mean, Ann, and I'm so glad to hear that your boy recovered too. I try not to get too attached to my chickens, but there are a couple (Joe and a little gray aruacana named Hazel) who I've grown so fond of!
