Recently I posted about 2 chickens that were mangled and couldn't figure it out.

Well, as of yesterday, my suspisions were confirmed. Our neighbor's dog sneaks into our yard and steals whatever he can.

And, our other (good) neighbors are going to have to do a fast chicken re-location due to a possum she found in the coop the other night. Our neighbor had found a home for these chickens, but the people haven't even gotten around to building a coop. These good neighbors are moving end of March and are busy trying to downsize. Glad we can assist in a pinch.

Between dogs and wildfife, what's a chicken to do?! Good news is, our coop setups are pretty secure. The biggest one is one of those "million screw specials" we ordered last Spring from the local metal shop. As they say around here....it's stout!

So, as Murphy's Law dictates, we have 6 chickens that replaced 6 we culled a few weeks ago. We have 14 new standard chicks that just arrived yesterday, and now we'll be relocating 6 additional into our flock. Including the new silkies too, it will bring our grand total to 55!!

Oh boy!

Glad you 'caught' the culprit. Most ag communities have strict policies against dogs maurading the neighbors' flocks (up to and including replacement cost of chickens and/or shooting on sight, no joke!)Probably not farmgirl-like or even a good idea to shoot the neighbor's dog, but I would check with the township/county on any laws in place, then plan a potentially awkward conversation with dog's owner to point out its their responsbility to keep their dog on their property, country or not.

Gotta keep that expanded flock safe...plus any cats, other small animals or young children!
