You all seem pretty creative, wise and thrifty. I need help re-organizing our house.
We have three boys, and my husband thinks they all need separate bedrooms.
What can we do to improve these bedrooms? (and should we/could we re-do the loft as a bedroom?)
Here's some pics: http://helpmyhouse.blogspot.com/
Thanks!

Wow! I was one of 3 girls and we never all had our own bedroom. Actually, we all 3 had to share sometimes, and we took turns either have our own room or sharing with one other sister. My 2 boys have their own rooms because we happen to have 2 rooms, but when we have another, they are going to have to share. If you painted the walls in the loft a bright color, I'm thinking yellow, it would brighten it up a lot. We lived in my grandparents' basement for a time, and my room didn't have any windows, but was painted lavender, and was nice and bright. I think it may even be better as far as sleeping to not have many bedroom windows. You'd definitely have to run some heat and maybe put in some insulation. That would probably help with noise from the living room. How old are your kids?

You know, I agree. I don't think the boys each need their own room. But, my DH feels very strongly about it.

Maybe you could put up some privacy screens to have a little separation. I only had to share in summer with my step sister. I grew up with neighbors that had to share a loft and separated it with tall dressers and hanging fabrics.

You could build in beds along one wall with a wall between them and curtains to close when one needs privacy, they could have wall mounted reading lights inside the 'bed nook'- sort of like swedish beds that are little rooms on their own.

I like Rebekka's idea, especially after seeing it done in Country Home this month. It was like built in "book cases" only bedsteads. Each child had their own space, with inset lighting for reading, etc...it looked really cozy and I thought, "man, I wish someone had done that for me when I was little!"
Is your house a cape cod style? It's hard to do that loft space, but it would make sense...however, I'm kindof in agreement that they don't need their own rooms. Maybe 2 could share and the oldest gets a private room? That would free up some space, and as the child turns teenaged, it might be beneficial for their own development.

I don't think they need their own rooms either. We have 5 kids and they shared off and on their whole lives. It was a good learning experience in how to get along with people. We did do several things to give them a sense of their own space however. I would put up bookcases or little partition walls to give them a sense of individual space. Put the bunkbeds in the middle of the room and block the right side on the bottom and the left side on the top. Hang a curtain to separate. Even thre up a wall one time that was framed with the narrow side of the 2x4 so it wasn't as thick, used sheetrock and they had permission to draw whatever they wanted on their new wall, just not the existing one!
I think there a tons of ways to give them their own space even when they are sharing.
Good luck
