Hi farmgirls!
I am currently living in Chicago but thinking of moving to Madison, Wisconsin. My boyfriend and I are looking for an engery efficient/green home in that area so that we can still live in a city and have a garden too. I am looking for any information about this and also wanting to meet some other farmgirls in Chicago or Wisconsin.

Thanks for all the help. Happy gardening.

Cynthia

Welcome Cynthia!
I grew up in Chicago metro, now live in 'far north' suburb of Kenosha County, Wis., just over the border and about 1.5 hrs to Madison. I've visited there quite a few times, it's a beutiful city that always seems to be high up on the 'most wonderful places to live' lists. Pretty sure you'll find lots of like-minded people there, and know you'll find them here on the site!

Hi Cynthia, My daughter lives in a little place near Bayfield Wisconsin called Redcliff. It is lovely there and this time of year the color show cannot be missed.
Clare posted a topic about green communities on the forum yesterday so if you go to her profile you can find the link in the post.
Many of us are living green as much as we can right where we are but the idea of a group that works together seems wonderful especially if you have young children.
Welcome!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I look forward to learning from all the farmgirls. Right now I am gardening in a community garden plot (only about 4 x 6') but it is the city so I'll take whatever land I can get. I also do flower gardening in the corner of the block, condo gardening, and my deck container gardening. It has been pretty dry in Chicago. So most of the time we have spent watering (and eating). Lots of beans and cucumbers!

Happy gardening.

Hi Cynthia -- I'm in the northern burbs of Chicago. Used to have a community plot in Evanston when we lived there. Now we have 1/2 acre, but less sun as the years go by because we're always planting trees and shrubs (my husband's passion). I'm a perennial and herb gardener, and also had great tomatoes and peppers this year. I did my pepper plants in large containers, using a combo of Miracle Gro garden soil (from H Depot) and soilless mix in the containers. Had to water every day, but we have tons of habeneros, scotch bonnets, banana peppers, jalapas, and salsa peppers. It's such a drag to water every day, though. Do you have to pay for water in the city? We have Lake Michigan water, but have to pay for it -- I hate to think of what our bill will be this year. Midsummer last year it was $200. But we always think that paying for the water is cheaper than paying to have dead trees removed and replaced! Cheers on your decision to move to Madison. Very pretty up there. A progressive community -- you'll like it! Kathy

Hi. I am a fellow farmgirl from Chicago. I grew up in the city and now work downtown although I live in the suburbs. Are you definately moving to Madison? It is a lovely area. As a native Chicago resident it is hard for me to think of any better city on the planet, but I must admit that I have been eyeing property out west (Wyoming) as a possible retirement area. I guess I am just confused farmgirl or ranch hand!!!!

Hi Cynthia, I live in Germantown WI, about an hour from Madison. I think you'll like the area. I'm trying to find a Chapter around the general area to join, maybe with more farmgirls in the area it will happen. Welcome, you'll love these forums. Jan

Hi Cynthia - I lived in Madison fifteen years ago and now live in Delafield which is 45 minutes west of Madison. It is a wonderful place, rolling hills, great bike trails and one of the most lovely farmers market you can find in the midwest. There are many resources for what you are looking for, have you looked into the SunPrairie or Mazomanie? Also check out the local Slow Food movement website, you will find a strong presence in that area and may find some good advice from people who are farming in the area.
