I am really getting tired of the "public service" announcements that give kids ideas of things to do. For an example, the other night I saw one of a kid showing off all the perscription drugs he took from his family. He was saying sarcastically, "This one is for my hip replacement, and this was for my hysterectomy . . ." I understand that the message was for parents to lock up drugs, etc. but in the meantime they gave kids the idea of "Hey, I can steal my parents perscription drugs and get a buzz." Maybe they didn't realize what the meds did, but after that commercial it was clear. Another such announcement, shows kids getting ideas for bombs, making their own ammunition, etc. off the internet. Yes, it is supposed to make us parents know to watch kids on the internet, but once again it makes it perfectly clear that if you want to learn how to make a bomb or your own ammo you simply go to the internet. These supposedly "helpful" public service announcements are simply adding ideas to the minds of messed up kids. It really frustrates me. It is kind of like the lovely sex education they teach in the public schools . . . first they say absentence is best but then proceed to show how to put a condom on a banana. Gee, as visual beings, what message spoke the loudest?! Can you tell this sort of thing gets my goat?

My husband is a paramedic and gets so mad when they give publicity to kids doing dumb things such as blowing up things, shootings in schools, etc. There is always a rise in "copy cat" crimes right afterwards. These public service announcements are basically doing the same thing by telling kids how to steal drugs or blow up things.

Okay, got that off my chest . . . now I will go back to being nice!

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda

I've never seen any of these public service announcements. I guess I don't watch enough tv to catch them. But I have to agree with you, Brenda; kids get enough ideas from their peers (even parents) without the media adding to them.

But this then leads me to my rant...What is going on in society now that we have so many kids doing drugs, DUI's, sexually molesting/seriously battering other kids, killing their peers/parents/whoever? A lot has changed since we were kids and I believe we have lost a lot of our values/moral teachings, among other things and inadvertently created new generations of kids who are totally messed up. Of course, it doesn't help that so many parents are druggies and alcoholics and their kids are seriously abused and/or neglected. What are those kids learning?

Sorry about that. This is such a serious problem that it really bothers me a lot to see what is happening to all these kids - our so-called leaders of tomorrow. Now is that a scary notion or what?

Lisa,
I totally agree. It is such a hard world we live in now. As the mom of two teenage boys and a third who will be a teenager in April, I shudder to think about some of the things they are exposed to. Chewing is a huge problem in the schools and so played down. Kids die of mouth and throat cancer, but most teachers shrug it off as a kid thing. I even know of one mom who buys it for her son . . . so he can bond more with her chewing husband!?!! Where are parents brains. As for the public service announcement making it clear parents should lock up their prescription drugs, it seems to me instead we should teach our children the dangers and reasons not to do drugs. My parents never locked our medicine cabinets and it seems absurd that we should need to. Part of me simply wants to put my kids in a big old bubble for about 10 years! LOL! I hate the lack of control we as parents have.

Another really scary thing is the United Nations Rights of a Child treaty. All but the U.S. and a couple other countries have signed on for this. If the U.S. signs (which it is predicted will happen if we elect a democrat president) parents will lose their rights of discipline, religion and most other "freedoms." Homeschoolers will be stopped and basically the government will decide what is best for our children. If a child complains of going to church, he could actually be removed from that home! It is a scary thought to have the government in control rather than parents. This treaty would actually supercede the U.S. constitution and so the freedoms written in that document will simply be historical jargin with no power behind them. Scary thought!

So now you got me going on another rant! LOL!

Oh, let me add to that rant! We have lost so many of our freedoms already all in the name of "terrorism" and "national security" without much complaint that we will surely lose more. Eventually, we will have none left. As long as they only take away 1 or 2 at a time; no one does anything about it. Certainly, no one is listening to those of us who refuse to be sheep.

We've become like the frog in the pot of water. Put the frog in hot boiling water and it'll have no part of it and jump right out. Put the frog in cool water and turn the heat up gradually, that frog will sit in there and cook to death!

The commercials that bother me, along with the one you mentioned Brenda is the one about "Talking to your kids about not having Sex" The one with the kids that says Talk to me. I will talk to my kids about sex when I am good and ready! But now that its mentioned on TV, they want to know what it is!! Grr

It's so hard to talk to your kids about any serious issue but especially sex! I found the best way to deal with it is just to answer their questions, without being too graphic, without showing any shock (that's really hard to do!), in a way they can understand it at their age. I think it has worked really well with dd (the youngest). It only took 3 other kids as guinea pigs to learn how to do it!

Lisa thats what I am finding out, the less shocked I am or act, the better. It is just irritating that if the TV is on,some stranger is prompting my kid to ask about sex, ya know?

In a way it is like the media is undermining our control as parents. They decide when and how much to tell our kids, rather than letting it be something parents control. I truly want to raise my kids, not the media or the government! Frustrating!

Yes, Amanda, I know what you mean. It's so hard parenting when the media is bombarding our kids and unfortunately, sex isn't the only controversial subject they expose our kids to that we then have to find a way to explain.

But then the media isn't the only source of our frustration. When dd was 11, she overheard some high school kids on the bus talking about a girl they all knew who had been raped and were making jokes about it. It was a horrible situation and I was extremely upset that I not only had to explain what rape was to an 11 year old, but then have to explain why these kids were making jokes about it and why that was wrong. I actually cried over having to have that conversation with her. But, in so doing, I think I instilled a strong sense of compassion and a strong belief in her to not tease or make fun of anyone for any reason as well as to be careful with who she will date when she got older. While I certainly didn't want to have that conversation with her at that age, it ended up being several lessons in one and turned out ok.

I guess when it comes down to it, we're going to be forced to have these unpleasant conversations with our kids as they come up and we just don't have a choice as to when that will be.

Brenda, actually the US signed that treaty more than a decade ago, but it has yet to be ratified. I don't think it is likely to be ratified, either. There are far too many people, Republican or Democrat or anyone in the middle or extremes who aren't willing to give up their right to parent and won 't let their Senators and Reps allow it.

Here is the most recent article I could find against the treaty:
http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000000/00000020.asp

It has it's good merits, and can be totally avoided (if ratified) if children are simply allowed to be unschooled and told from an early age that our school systems are not great. yep, it might be a bit of indoctrination, but I'd rather that sort of indoctrination than that given at school and via the media. I DO allow my children pretty much anything, but I refuse to allow improper behavior based on their "rights".

Those commercials bug me a little too, but that is how the majority communicates anymore and so it's the only way to really get a lot of parents to think about needing to talk to their kids. Most people don't realize that they can in fact turn off the TV and EGADS! TALK to their families!

Brenda, I can really identify with your frustrations. It breaks my heart when I see these things and is so troubling. I, too, have 2 teenage boys and one who is coming up right behind them. I'm all for the big bubble! We do our best to counter these negative messages by really communicating with our boys constantly and loving them and talking some more. And we pray ... alot! I am almost brought to tears when I think about the kind of world our children will have. And that Treaty ... what are folks thinking? Children are our most precious gift. How can we just hand them over to the government for raising.

... and while we're on this whole subject, my husband just brought home three new coins today. $1 presidential coins. He handed them to me with a sad look on his face and then told me to look closely at what was missing. No more "In God We Trust". Well, actually it is there ~ on the rim of the coin in print so tiny that even with a magnifying glass, I had difficult making it out. Heaven help us!

Ok Brenda, ad this to the list, how about the "Herpes" ad using what appears to be "upper class" couples, and implying it's no big deal. And then there is the KY lubricant ad that always manages to come on in the middle of my favorite craft shows...not to mention other "personal" type ads...I hate being bombarded with them.
I don't mind them (the ads) in womens magazines, but not on the T.V. where impressionable minds are watching. How delightful to be snuggling on the sofa with your sweetheart and the Herpes ad comes on! Oh joy!

Yes, Grace, isn't it lovely! It used to be certain commercials couldn't air until after 9 pm. I am guessing that rule has changed?

Tasha, I guess it was the "ratifying" part that I have been hearing so much about. To me it just sounds awful to think that the government could control the beliefs and values we want to pass on to our children. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. all seem to be attacked with this. I remember as a child believing the United Nations was this wonderful thing that helped bring unity across the world . . . at least that is how they taught it to us. Now I realize that this "one world order" they are attempting to bring about undoes everyone's right to their own thoughts and beliefs. It is really weird to see how this was all predicted 1000s of years ago and it is now coming true. There will soon be no true belief systems or religions. It will all be relative and while I agree we should all live at peace with one another, regardless of religion, we need to be able to hold on to what are our beliefs and not expected to compromise. In the one world order, we are to except that all religions lead to the same end. Basically saying Budda and God are the same. That is sort of like saying a dog and a bird are the same since they both breath. Just a weird world we live in, where absolutes are no longer absolute.

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda
