OK, am I the only one in need of a "Dirty Manicure" ????
I am so in need of playing in my garden which I don't have yet 'cuz of all this white cold stuff covering my property...
I do have my little green house & I trimed some of my little house plants back to get a "garden fix" but I realy really really need to put on my straw hat, garden gloves an go play in the dirt. I need a Dirt Manicure in the worst way!

Hey Bonnie, I am sooooo in need of some dirty under my nails, & some sunshine(it's foggy today) and yes,,,I do love the smell of the fresh tilled soil! Gardening this year is going to be tuff for me, as I am new to the Washington area. I am sort of spoiled with the wonderful climate we had back in So. California. My lavender grew year round and I would pick the last of my tomatos around the end of October, small but garden fresh and I only garden organicly, no pesticides or herbacides. Just "home grown" compost and I propergated & seed saved my own. I also would seed swap w/friends. OK, get a grip Grace, Mr Sun will shine and the snow will melt....(won't it?} I planted tulip bulbs last Fall, & they have not poked their heads up yet, but who am I kidding, if & when they do our local deer will snack on them like "hor'derves" lol! tata-4-now

YES! Check out this great quote that reminds me...
"You can trust dirty fingernails. Generalizations don’t usually fit so well as this one, but it’s true. I am drawn towards people with a darkened half moon atop their fingers. I can guess they’ve been transplanting flowers from pots into beds, protecting the wispy roots until they are buried safely in the ground. Maybe they work in the field, in a dirty truck, with hand tools. They could be teachers, the ones who kneel on the ground next to the kids, examining earthworms in wet mud. Potters, naturalists, firefighters, farmers. Dirt is like a secret code, the special knock of a fraternal order. You glance at each other’s hands, and you know. I trust this little sign; it implies a tangible investment. To get dirt under your fingernails, you have to touch the world."
--from a story called "Dirt" by Christine Byl (included in my book,A Mile in Her Boots)

Grace you are so right....the dirt just calls out to us.
Jen, that quote is super. It reminds me of my grandfather....he'd check out the hands of my "boyfriends" and comment on whether they had calluses or not. He always told me that a man with soft and clean hands isn't worth much.
Blessings Catherine

On one of my trips back to Germany to vist my family & childhood friend, my Opa(grandfather) & I went to a little Gasthaus-(a type of resturant), Opa introduced me to a non discript old woman. She wore a well worn house dress w/a simple white cotton towel apron, a bandana around her hair and her hands were worn beyond her years. Her hands were stained and calloused and had deep creases. She was probably not as old as she looked, which to was about 70-ish. She was the Greeter, waitress, cook & busboy. She did it all. I suspect she probablly got her potatos & veggies for the resturant from her own garden. I would be so pround to have her hands,,,it means she was a hard worker and to still be going strong at her age I think is a testament to her simple, honest & hard working ethics. Calloused dirty hands are good honest hard working hands. The kind I want and hope to achieve through my garden.

I love that philosophy, Catherine. Hands are so revealing, and I'm so drawn to strong, working hands. Beautiful. I'll have to keep that in mind when my youngsters start dating...yikes!

I LOVE all this talk about hands and Gracie, I love your story. My hands are beginning to look worn. I sometimes look at them and wish my hands and nails were pretty but I enjoy my love for gardening and household chores! Thanks for the reminder it is a beautiful thing to have worn hands. XO

Yep, I would'nt trade dirty hands for fancy manicured ones for all the tea in China, well maybe some of the tea..snicker snicker! Right now the only Dirty Manicure I get is from digging the mud off my boots....our snow is slowly starting to melt and it's muddy around the Man Cave(work shop) but it's a heck of a lot of fun to play in with the ATC.

I got my dirty manicure right after work yesterday.
Planted squash, zuks, cucks, bell peppers, tomatoes, sunflowers, eggplant and melons. I'm on a roll now.
By Saturday I'll be ready for another. |

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when the most recent foot of snow was washed away in front of my kitchen windows, I spied some little snowdrops in bloom And today the snow has disappeared a bit more, and there are lots more snowdrops waiting to open. There is nothing like getting your hands in the dirt. It is going to be a long wait for me, but I'm making lists of what I want to get at the greenhouses and what needs to be divided and moved. Our last freeze comes anywhere from the beginning to the middle of June so one has to be careful about planting in this climate.Gardens are the best, Karin

oh! me too. I'm dying to get in there and scrunch my hands in the earth and get all dirty. I REALLY need to have a few good days to go out and play in the mud! My tulips are poking their noses out and I think I'm seeing pre buds on the willows and a few of the hills have a haze of green about them... Spring birds are about and I'm getting ready to pounce on the next nice day

I agree with all of you. Spring can't come soon enough for me. I am going outside right now to see if I have anything coming up in my flower garden.

I'm so glad that I read all of your post, otherwise I might have missed my crocus. They are blooming and I have Easter flowers starting to poke their heads out of the ground. And I couldn't resist getting on my hands and knees and pull some weeds. I got my first dirty manicure of the year. It felt great until I accidently got another kind of manicure with something that one of the cats left in my garden. That definitely wasn't what I expected.

Hee hee hee, ok, now that was toooo funny,,,,,don't ya just love those unexpected "tootsie rolls"...lol! I am hoping by this weekend nearly all of the snow will be melted away out here on the West Plains... I am sprouting Chives, Basil, Parsley, & Kitty mint on the windowsill. Just love those windowsill gardens.

I got my first dirt manicure this weekend. Pulled an over abundance of crazy catmint, and uncovered some daffodils. Pulled yucky grass, and pines needles from one "flower" bed up front, uncovered like 50 or more Iris, i think and a bunch more tupils, i think. All the snow is melting so we are begining to see what was left from the previous owner. A huge Basil plant, numerous bulbs,a very pretty stepping stone path,by the deck. And the garden is 3 or 4 feet high w/ left overs from last season,it is gonna take a LONG time and lotsa muscle to get it cleaned. So dirty manicures here i come!! ( well as soon as the wind dies down a bit ; ) )

I did actually spend the day outside a week ago, trimming my perennials, etc. I am so anxious to do more . . . put in my raised beds for my garden, dig my backyard flower gardens, etc. We live on a hill and so it takes extra planning. I am determined to make major headway this year!
Hugs & blessings,
Brenda

Oh sure miss brenda, put me to "gardening shame"....lol! ok, so I haven't tilled my garden yet,,, but I did go apesnot @ Wally World and bought a bunch of seed packets. I save my little (Activa) yogurt cups for planting my seeds in... I also cut down plastic milk containers to use for seed starting pots...not much of a "dirt manicue, but at least I am getting my hands dirty! haha! Brenda....4/1 ???good for you???
