I know it's a negative thought, but I thought it might be fun for us to tell about our worst sewing disasters. I've had many in my 50+ years of sewing, but the one that sticks in my mind happened when I was just oh, probably about 13 years old. I had been working and working to get a zipper into a dress - it just wouldn't come out right. First one side would be longer than the other, then the flap wouldn't cover - one thing after another. But, I stuck with it and FINALLY, the zipper was perfect. Proud and excited, I called my mom into the room to show her. She looked at it and said "It is in perfectly, it's too bad it's in the bottom of the dress!" I had somenhow turned my work around and sure enough, the zipper was perfectly installed into the bottom of the back seam of the dress. Nothing else since has been quite so dramatic!

 Oh tons...some I'd rather not even admit too. Like the great pair of dress pants I made one time, complete with welt pockets. Man I'm good (or NOT)...welt pockets don't look so hot on the FRONT of the pants.
I made some unitards one time too...you know, the one piece, long sleeved, full leg tight-fitting dance thingies. Anyway, they turned out great if you were six ft tall and weighted 25lbs. Seems it really did matter that the stretch went AROUND the body. <sigh>

0h my g00dness girls n0w th0se are funny, at the m0ment i just cant think 0f any pr0jects g0ne wr0ng but i d0 remember the baby quilt fr0m he** cause it had a milli0n little bl0cks all 2 in finished uck!!!!

Do you mean the brown bag dresses? Those 2 dresses that I could not figure out and got so darn disgusted they literally went into the closet in grocery brown paper bags not to see the light of days for years. Then they went to the goodwill.
Lastest mess up, trying to put satin binding around the baby blanket. It is uglier than sin right now, taking it all back off!!!!!!
Zippers, I don't think so!!!!!

| i'm the one who can' sew clothes!?.....when i did try (when i was young) i also had a problem with a zipper..(your story reminded me of it) i was trying to get it in the back of this polyester fabric dress..(remember that god-awful spongy material back in the 60's??) i did it so many times and kept "ripping" it out (literally!) that by the time i actually got it in, there really wasn't any fabric to keep it there.... there were actually torn holes on either side of the stupid zipper. that article of clothing by-passed even the brown bags in the closet....it was put straight out into the trash!! |

When I was in high school we had a Mother's Tea each Spring, and along with this was a fashion show put on by the Home Ec. sewing classes. We girls were excited for our Mom's to come and see what we'd been doing in class. Well...I was somewhat of a fashion DIVA (in my mind) in HS and couldn't possibly JUST make a simple dress or blouse. Noooooooo...I chose to make a pair of knit parachute type pants with wrapped ankles, and a LINED komono jacket. As the date for the fashion show got closer I got more & more excited, and panicked, and sewed those stupid pants together INSIDE OUT, not once, not twice...but THREE times! Have you ever picked open a seam on knits? Try four LONG seams X 3, that's TWELVE seams in all! My poor teacher! She was so patient & even now claims I was one of her best students. No wonder I love(d) her! I did dearly love to sew, and through my mistakes became proficient with the seam ripper that semester.
I finally did finish the outfit and was able to model it at the tea. I was also elected "May Queen" for my class and made my Momma proud! I used to have a photo of me on the "catwalk" modeling my creation. I will take a look & see if I can find it. Good for a chuckle!
EVERY time I sew, I STILL check several times to be sure I have the right sides together! And I always keep a seam ripper handy.

| When I was about thirteen, and felt there was no real need for me to read the complicated instructions on patterns, I struggled mightily with putting sleeves in. The best job I did was when I fitted a sleeve perfectly into a neck opening. That was when my mother refused to let me use her sewing machine again until I started paying a bit more attention. For years I avoided sewing anything with zippers in it, but in the last couple of years I found some instructions somewhere that finally penetrated my aging brain. I can now put in a perfectly acceptable zipper....Karin |

My worst sewing mistake so far is the full apron I made a couple of months ago. It looks alright in the photo, but that's because you can't see the worst bits! I still have no idea how it went all so poorly but there were extra bits that I couldn't figure out where they went and bits that turned out, uhm...not how the picture looked! LOL

worst project...hmm...was it the jersey dress sewn without the stretch stitch, following a no-stretch fabric pattern(it ended up like 4 inches bigger then the pattern!)...or was it the skirt that I used heavy fusible interfacing on(never did finish the skirt, might still though...I cut the waist off...haha), and the dress went to the thrift)
But that's the only things I can think of right now...

my most recent sewing disaster was about a week and a half ago. i had this aweful headcold and since the dvd player is broke, was longing for something to do that would occupy my time and keep my mind off the ache in my head. i reasoned that i was a good enough seamstress to whip up a very simple pair of elastic waist pants, with a few alterations. i carefuly traced out my pattern and cut it up and cut it out to make the pants pieced on one side. then i proceeded to sew. my stitching was beautiful...but i had cut out two left legs! when the final step of putting them together came i could go no futher.
What we write today slipped into our souls some other day when we were alone and doing nothing.
