One of my five dogs recently(2-3 weeks ago) spent a day at a vet's office having a small growth removed. He came home with kennel cough and has spread it to the other dogs. We took him back and they prescribed cough medicine, which he took. Now the other four dogs have kennel cough and the vet's office refuses to prescribe any more medicine unless they 'see' the other four dogs. I don't have the money right now to pay for four vet visits to cure something the first dog brought home from THERE! Anybody have any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help. I'm really steamed!

That's terrible Janice. First, I'd call & ask to speak directly to your vet. I would explain the situation. If they won't work with you I think I might find another vet... and I'd tell them that.

My sister brought a rescue dog home with kennel cough and was mostly told just to nurse her until she was well. Keeping them comfortable is the biggest part. I think time is the healer here. Breeders and rescue groups deal with this alot...is there one in your area you could consult-just for ideas on how to keep the dogs comfortable?

It must be terrible for ALL of them to be ill at once. You poor thing...I bet you're TIRED! My rescue pup came down with what we thought was distemper a week after we brought him home. Thankfully it turned out to be canine influenza. Still was horrible. Not to be an alarmist, but be sure to watch your animals for worstening signs as these things have similar symptoms and are often hard to diagnose.

I agree, you should not have to pay for additional visits. Perhaps if you offered to bring ONE dog in just to let your vet SEE the symptoms-and to know you are being honest, they would agree to see the other free of charge? Anyway, it really stinks.

Janice,
So sorry to hear about your dogs! I have to agree with Rhonda. I would try to talk directly to the vet. My gosh - they have to have some understanding. I think our vet costs more than my doctor for a visit. I hope they will have some compassion and work with you on this.

Janice,

My husband and I used to run a dog and cat boarding kennel. We would frequently get dogs who had just been to the vet to have their vaccinations updated in order to board them and they would come down with kennel cough. There are something like thirteen different bacteria and viruses that can cause the symptoms of kennel cough and unfortunately there is a vaccine for only one. Most times it is no more serious than a cold for a person. We always used St. Joseph's cough syrup for children to control the cough and of course isolated the dog. We also had a broadspectrum antibiotic that we injected once at the first sign, I think it was called Combiotic (it's been a while) and you might be able to find something like it at a feed store. I don't think you have to worry unless the symptoms increase to include a temperature, mucous draining from their nose, or signs of malaise or loss of appetite. I know vets are expensive. I actually carried it home to my own dogs and never had a serious problem. It should run it's course in about two weeks.

Thanks, everybody! Right now, my small terrier dog and my pit, Buster, are the ones showing the signs. The other three are much better. This is the second round for the terrier, though. My dh brought home some antibiotics. The vet's office did say we could give them Robitussin but only for a couple of days. I checked the website Alee recommended and printed out info from there(I'm giving them vitamin C, which was recommended). They also recommended echinacea, which I may try. This is like little kids in a daycare - they just keep passing it around.
