Ok guys, I have a huge corner of my yard where I want to have kind of a cottage garden-y feel along with a few herbs mixed in there. I've never planted flower seeds before. What are some good ones I should have in there, that are sure to come up? I had a friend who works in a greenhouse say that some don't work very well from seed, and it made me nervous just to start planting willy nilly. Ideas and advice please?

Marigolds, zinnias, alyssum, lobelia, hollyhocks (will bloom next year) are just a few of the no experience needed to grow varieties! I'm not sure what would be best for your part of the country, but these flowers will grow everywhere but in the desert.

try a wildflower mix.just make sure that you rake the area smooth and remove all the grass.then sow away. and water as directed on the seed packet. you should be plesantly surprised in about 2 months.
but yes zinnia, marigold, cosmos, all sprout fast and put on a lovely show.

Petunias are generally difficult to start from seed but if you can get the "Laura Bush Petunia" seeds...they re-seed themselves in my yard every year. I find them all over the place each spring and transplant them to where I want them. I even find them in my veggie beds. Apparently, in the fall, when I toss the dead plants into the compost pile the seeds remain viable and of course the compost goes in the veggie garden.
